Ah, so you can eat with your family, but the second you put that fork down, get your ass to work, BITCH. You're working from 8pm to 6am, so eat fast and eat hardy cause you'll need it.

That's a load of BS. Its a PR campaign and "nothing more complicated than that". Everything a corporation does is for profit. Making people think that Costco holds the moral high ground is likely to bring in more business and they will make up the loss from closing on thanksgiving.

So? It's still a win-win situation for both Costco and their employees.

If you keep your employees happy, you get increased productivity and less turnaround. Customers get a better shopping experience. Which means more money in the bank at the end of the day.

of course, it obviously depends on the industry/position... for all the people who scream bloody murder about the horror of people having to work on Thanksgiving, I'd love to see their reaction if Facebook or Netflix went offline like and stayed down all day because "sorry bro, it's Thanksgiving. All the techs are off today to eat dinner with their families."

I dunno about that. Costco has a reputation for being a great employer, but I honestly don't think that substantially results in more or less business. Walmart has a reputation for being a terrible employer, and I doubt they feel the impact of that reputation one iota, especially around the Holidays. Regardless, it's still nice for the employees to have the day off.

I blame the people. If idiots were out there exercising their consumerism.......employees wouldn't be forced to work.....

Black Friday and other "consumerism" created crap are the best days to stay as far away from stores as possible.

Most of the "deals" are worthless anyways, within a month or 2 you can obtain better deals anyways.

And my christmas shopping is done by black friday anyways.....

Its a bit of both, consumers, social media, competition because someone else is open earlier than you and a poor labor market. I feel Consumers and Companies are both to blame.
I say we all shame businesses and people who are open or shop on Thanksgiving.

oh well, its just the way the schedule falls. they work a 3 day on, 3 day off 12 hour shifts.

Costco generally tries running a business by treating their employees as assets. This strategy has been very successful for them, and it is good for their employees too. Im surprised that there are still companies using other less successful strategies to be honest.

As long as it's with pay, that's fine. Back when I worked hourly, I would take those holiday hours so that others could get time off and I could get more money.

If you're normally scheduled on a Thursday and you lose eight hours of pay, that's not really doing you a service if you're barely making ends meet.
