We've been looking at king size mattreses for awhile now. The Mira Loma II at Costco is $649 and seems like the best deal around.
We really can't spend more than $700 or $800 so that rules out most of the decent pillowtops.
If anyone has bought one of the Costco mattresses, which one did you get and how do you like it?
What do you think about pillowtops vs. traditional with a foam topper?

Any other suggestions or advice?

Costco is not going to be the best choice.

I average half of list or less buying from independents....

Many mattresses have different names at different locations. You find out which are the same beds across the board and start playing each one's price off the other or simply know the bed you want walk in and say $700 now or you walk.

Problem is most don't walk, most don't negotiate, and most of the times they know if you are walking they can drop 10-25% and get you to take it.

alkemyst, You are so right. Mattress dealers can be talked to and negotiated with just like a used-car dealer. For me, the best time to buy mattresses has been 5:00 P.M. on a Sunday afternoon when there is a football game on TV. Nobody, and I mean "nobody" is out buying mattresses on such a day. They are quite eager to make a sale before they close up shop, so they'll listen very closely to what you are "willing" to pay.

go in and talk to them. you can get a mattress dealer to go down on price plus throw in a free frame and shipping. just have to play hardball. it helps to have other dealers in town

one other trick we did is my ex wife and I really wanted this bed, manager told us it was out of our price range sort of rudely (it wasn't, but we were sort of dressed for a home depot day and just swung by the mattress shop on a whim). So she went in in a sexy outfit and rolled around on it [and other stuff]...sweet talked the drone into the deal...and the sales idiot tried to backpedal out of it once I came in after she paged me when he knew he wasn't going to be part of the maiden voyage ;)

Another good deal I got on a guest bed was at this left over bedding deal at burdines...it was all new, but mismatched pieces...queen parts were $15 each box and 1/10 normal sale price each mattress. I found all three matching parts in the 100's of pieces $115, for a bed that retailed at $1000 or so. The tried not to sell me it since you weren't supposed to have a matching set....there were a bunch of old folks there that stood up for me though (for once :)) and got them to throw in free delivery for the harassment they caused me.

Sears and Macy's will not negotiate on mattresses -- to my knowledge. You need to find a place that only sells mattresses and bedding. Such examples are: Mattress Discounters, Mattress Warehouse -- and others which may be under different names in your area. These are the places that will wheel and deal with you -- not the department stores.

My wife and I bought a CA King Sealy posturepedic (sp?) there about a year and a half ago and frankly, it is the best mattress set we ever had. We both loved it from the start. At the time the set was about 650.00 or so. Not sure what they are carrying now.

Yeah, we are looking at the Sealy Posturpedic Mira Loma II king. They have it for $649 right now.

After seeing some of the nightmare stories about mattress dealers, especially the independent local places that are willing to bargain, I am very hesitant about going and trying to bargain at these places. Selling refurbished used mattreses as new is one of the common scams. They seem to be worse than used car dealers.

So that's why I would rather spend a little more somewhere like Costco and be sure I am getting a brand new, high quality mattress. Thanks for the review faZZter.
