Since this is a combo card (Amex/Costco) are you required to pay the membership
fee up-front? I think membership is like $35 or $40. So, paying $40 to get
$20 back is not such a good deal to me, unless you need to get Costco
membership anyway. I have Costco membership already and also the
Amex Blue card. How does Amex feel about you carrying two of their cards?
Do they care? Does this card offer all the features of the blue card?

You must be a Costco member to get this card.

As for the poor rebate schedule, I believe it maxes out at 1.5%. And this past summer, I got an offer from them for an extra 2% back (in cash!) on all purchases from 7/15-9/15. I made an extra $110 with that promotion!

<< Not a bad deal! An amex WITH ANO ANNUAL FEE! >>

This is really more like an Optima than a normal AMEX. Not that it really matters, there are plenty of them out there with no annual fee. There is a non-Costco AMEX Platinum Cash Rebate card as well.

It's a tricky situation. The credit card has no fee, but the fee is built into the $$ you pay for the yearly membership for costco. So really you are paying a yearly fee, but you also get a Charge Card.

YiPPiEkiYEH - what are you talking about? The card is not intended for anyone who is not a Costco member. If you are a member, then the fee is already paid. If you are not a member, then you should not be applying for the credit card.

Only a 20 day grace period?

Sounds like a good deal anyway, does anyone see any problem in getting this and not using it?

You can rebate 2% if you carry a balance. I suppose of you charge $2000 a month you can send them a check for $1999 and carry the dollar over to next month.

This is a common misconception with credit cards, that if you pay all but $1, you will only pay interest on $1. WRONG. If you try this you will find that it is a very costly mistake. You will pay interest on the average daily balance, possibly from the date of purchase (ie, negating the free float you had the month before).

Now, interestingly, I never carry a balance with them, but my statement always says that I have earned an extra few cents for carrying one. Very strange. And since they don't give you a running total of what your rebate is, I have no idea whether I am actually getting the extra money they say I am, or not. Next month is rebate time, hopefully they will show the calculation then.

20 days is pretty standard. If you are a Costco member, then it pays to have the card because AMEX is your only credit card option at Costco. If you're not a Costco member, then I don't see any reason to apply.
