Wow... Cost of living Fanboi's who woulda thunkit.

Well I'm not going to sit here and argue whether or not cost of living is rising fast or not... I say it is... and I don't like it... it's hitting from so many directions...

Healthcare is continuing to rise... In fairfax county where I live they now charge you for riding in an ambulance.

Gas prices are up

Entertainment costs are up...

sh!t everything is up.... I'm starting to become very aware of the crunch.

Is anyone else feeling it?

p.s. I'm not interested in what the official economic definition of what cost of living is... I'm interested in the cost to maintain my current standard of living... which I'm noticing going up significantly.... sure if I live in a cardboard box and eat tuna, I can keep my cost of living low. I know this may come as a shock.... but I'm not looking to have the bare minimum standard of life... I'd like to... *gasp* enjoy life.

Guess what. Your salary has also gone up, so it evens out. Welcome to life.

.
Move out of your parents basement and then say that!

Economics 101. Supply and Demand.

Gas: Oil at record prices, over $61 per barrel. No new refineries built in decades. SUVs that avg 15-20 mpg. I suggest that everyone Buy a Civic, it gets 40 mpg.

Movies: I dont go. Download them BitTorrent.

Housing Prices: Save, Save, Save (stop going to movies and eating out and drinking.)
Get a promotion and/or get a new job. Make more money. Else move to a less expensive area.

Cable/TV: cancel it. get an antenna. Stop watching tv. get a 2nd job and save for your downpayment.

Bottomline: Adapt, overcome, be flexible. What do you say?

QFT
I'm moving to texas soon to buy a 4k sqf house w/pool for the price of a 1bdr condo here in NoVA.

OK. What about the decrease in costs for most other items that you could ever want. With a lot of common and simple production moving to the third world, the average buying power of a dollar is going through the roof.

Think of the cost of a PC. $1000 four years ago, saw one for $250 this weekend. I just bought a refridgerator, washer, dryer, and a new stove - for $1600. Five years ago, the fridge alone would have been $1000 or more. New lawn mower. $125, same model line was $400 three years ago. A cheap import car a decade ago was at a minimum $15,000, now a new car can be had for $9000 - and the quality is not nearly as bad as some would think.

So, as some things are increasing (slightly) most other items are dropping. The high cost of homes is good for some people - as they are owners and are looking to profit. However, take note. High cost areas also have higher average wages. Someone in NYC or LA probably makes 25% to 50% more than someone in the Midwest for the same job. I could move two hours away to Chicago and make $35,000 more per year, easily, but my standard of living would not really increase all that much.

And everyone of the above I feel like I'm getting screwed

Gas Prices: How the hell else am I supposed to get to work?

Movie Prices: What I can't bring my own food or water, so I have to buy your food at 4-5x the price

Housing Prices: Why the hell do I have to pay the damn real estate agent so much damn money to do very very little... and how the hell do people afford to pay so much in mortgage payments every month.

CableTV: Only 1 provider in my area, and I don't have a clear view of the sky for sattelite. SO I buy whatever they sell me.

What happened to competition... I frankly don't see it manifesting itself anywhere...

1. Get rid of cable tv, tv sucks anyways
2. Get a cheap apartment in the ghetto
3. Start riding a bicycle, running to work, or take a bus
4. Stop going to the movies

Movies and cable TV aren't necessities. Housing prices are high, but interest rates are low.

You want to enjoy life more? Get a better job or marry a rich person.

If you look at figures published by the government, overall pay has NOT increased the past several years, and inflation is guestmated at between 2-3% a year. So the dollars you have today are not going to stretch as far as they did yesterday. If you are lucky enough to be getting 2-3% raises or better each year, then you have the same buying power (but might be spending more).
