Cost of building a new computer

We all have gone through purchasing computers and most new builders like to know what kind of bang for the buck you will get. I would like to offer a start to a system database with $$ of the components used to build a system over the past 2 years. We can list the component and cost of each before and after rebate. List the website/location you purchased the part from if you can. Make sure and tell if the part was retail, oem, refurbished, or used. List the price after shipping and tax of the components. List any rebates with before and after cost of the part. Also list the total cost of the system. Try to list the date purchased if you remember. Don't list the monitors because that gets really confusing with price and model number craziness. We don't care about overclocking on this thread. People concerned about overclocking know what to expect or can research that separately when they have their target budget in mind. Ok.. Let's get started.

If you have the components in your sig, just give a total cost in the post if you want. You don't have to go crazy. Just post something useful.

Main rig in sig, didn't buy it all at once, upgraded this and that, here and there, but total cost with everything brand new comes to around $2300.

I settled for the 3000+ for now, but bought board with plans to upgrade.
Total purchase price for this was $535, I robbed old system for HD, CDRW, Floppy, Monitor, KB, Mouse.
I added DVDRW after initial build +$70.
OC'd the 6600, to mild numbers, 530/1040, and can keep up with most "high-end" rigs.
Always room for improvement, namely moving up in CPU's when cost is right.
Definitely satisfied with results for cost.

I probably paid around $600 total. Most expensive thing is probably my 17" monitor which was made in 1999. Recent upgrades include my NF-7 Abit Mobo and my AMD XP +3000. I still haven't found anything that lags on it although I'm not trying to make it lag to give myself something to gripe about. If I remember correctly, my generic ATX case is about 6 years old and my power supply is an antec 440watt that a friend gave me as a payment for work I did for him. I upgrade parts as needed instead of trying to stay ahead of the curve. The only thing I built or added at the same time is the mobo, cpu, and ram. Other than that, I piece it together as needed or when I feel like it. I've always told people who ask me not to spend more than $150 on any one part while building a computer. You can have a nice rig while keeping in those specs. I got the stuff to use, not to show off or grow a bigger e-penis.

You forgot the cost of almost a terabyte of hard drive space for all the pr0n....plus the raptor for boot drive.

when it was all said and done, mine cost $1150. i upgraded everything from my old comp, except a scsi pci adapter. i just wanted to upgrade cpu, mobo video and ram, but, it just worked out that way.
