Cost efficient AGP card

Well is it that my 9800P was dead on me 🙁
I'm looking for an AGP card which will last long, that is way I mentioned Oblivion, since it is maybe the strongest nut arround now.

Was aiming towards 7600GS or 7600GT (which target my budget)
There's the 7900Gs arround' but don't know if it available in AGP.
Also should I wait for the X1650XT to come?

Thx,
T73

I would hold out for an x1950 pro. The 7600 series isn''t bad at all for it's price but the 128-bit memory bus will hurt it with demanding games and higher resolutions/AA, etc.

Waiting for the X1950Pro like aka1nas said might be your best bet...however if you'd rather buy the card now a 7800GS can do the job respectably. I have one and I can play it just fine at 1280x1024 with mid settings (no AA though).

7800GS or 850XT would be my choices. I lean towards more expensive higher performance cards though.

thanks for the tips!!!

The differences between x800Xt and 7600GT aren't so big, 7600GT looks better to my eyes.

Thinks I'll wait a bit for the comimg ATI cards
The 7800GS doesn't look so good on this review, Leadtechs 7600GT passes it.

Just to be sure, how does 7600GT do with Oblivion?

I have the PNY Geforce 7600 GS 512 meg shown HERE and it is only 140.00. I am replacing the stock heatsink & fan because it ran a little warm but other than that works great

AFAIK, the GT versions of the 7600 have not yet appeared in AGP form. The X800 cards, when found at the $150-$170 level, top anything else at that price, but the supply of them has shrunk seriously since all of the sales were put on.

A little late but just wanted to thank everyone here helping.

Decided to wait for the X1900Pro and then will see whether I'll go for it or for the 7600GT / X800XT (maybe we will see a price drop on them).

Thanks,
T73

out of stock right now

From the benchs, a 7600GT AGP is fast as a 7800GS.

I also heard the X1650XT and X1950pro will come as AGP.

A 7600GT AGP should do you fine, unless you hold out for the rumoureed X1950pro AGP for $199

7800gs is the fastest AGP card you can get...I think. Well, the later x800 series might top it, but they lack shader model 3 (which if you're going for a higher end card...you would want it).

but not for Oblivion . . . the ati's older AGP cards consistently top nvidia's
[plus . . . now, x1900 offers HDR + AA in Oblivion which even the GX2 does not] 😛

"lack" of SM3 is old news by now . . . and i don't think you see ANY difference in Oblivion between x800'x 2.0 and 3.0

anyway it looks like the OP is gonna wait to check out the 1900p

apoppin, I saw this HDR+AA review and it looks great.
Still I hope there's an option to control it a bit, the lighted areas are somewhat dazzling.
Is the HDR an addition to ATIs shader 2 or replaces it?

there is also this nice Nvidia vs ATI image comparison.
All in all the differences are minimal but what they call "the shimmering effect" is troubling.

How do they offer HDR + AA? I have an x1900GT and it won't let me.... is that only for the xt/xtx versions?

my x800gt handles oblivion with honor. (at 1280x1028 with 4xAA and all maxed out setting, except shadows and texture resolution )
so a single x850xt or 7800gs should be more than enough

theoretically, yes . . . but would you enable it on an x1300 for Oblivion.
:Q

😛

it is really practical mostly for x1900 . . .

edit: bobsmith1492, you should be able to enable it on your gt . . .
t73, i know what i am missing on my x850xt. 😛 . . . not sure of the technical details how it is implemented in Oblivion . . . there was an article about it . . . maybe AT.

Hm, is there a trick?? A registry key? A special driver?

i'm not sure . . . do you still need chuck patch or is it integrated into the latest drivers?

try search . . . or keep asking. 😉
