stupid question, but I couldn't find an answer on google or on corsairs website.

Corsair has two 512mb XMS pc3200 chips:

CMX512-3200C2
CMX512-3200C2PT

both have the same timings. Is the only difference that once has black heatsink and the other has silver?

I also noticed on the chips with black heatsink its says XMS3202v2.2, and ones with the silver heatsink says XMS3202v4.1.

Can someone explain please?

"Black or Platinum Heat Spreaders. The Choice is Yours
It's just a matter of style. The memory under the hood is the same, the heat spreader is the same. Just choose a part number with a PT for a platinum colored heat sink. Modules without a PT in the part number are our classic black."

They are simply different revision numbers of the same memory. The "v4.1" would be newer than the "v2.2".
v8.1 would be newer than the "v4.1".
