Hi, I bought a Corsair VX 550 watt power supply and am concerned that too many wires
will restrict important air flow. I have a mid-tower case (for the life of me I cannot remember the brand) and I heard quite a few buyers of the 550 saying the extra cables make it a very tight fit in their computers. Should I worry about this? Should I add an
exhaust fan to my computer?

If you don't have an exhaust fan at all, you should get one regardless of the PSU cabling.

Regarding the PSU cables, they won't restrict air flow that much. I know most people think they do, but they don't. What restricts airflow 100X more than what PSU cabling can do are the stock fan grills on most cases. Seriously.

What you just want to do is to bundle the extra cables out of the way so that they can't accidentally fall into your CPU fan or something. Use a twist tie or cable tie, bundle them and then shove that bundle into an empty bay underneath your optical drives. Voila!

Thanks for the replying. So is there a particular brand/model of exhaust fan you would
suggest? Sometimes I can be sensitive to sounds.

Corsair includes twist ties! That is funny about how you said how to shove excess cabling into that space below the optical drives. I was pondering that myself before posting here.
I tried to visualize how large the area is and if it would be suitable for extraneous (sp?)
wiring. So you think my mid-tower case is golden? So should I open it up and examine the
spaces for storing cabling?

thanks

For fan, what size? Most people like the "L" model Yate Loon fans for 120mm size.

I don't know what case you have. If you don't remember brand/model, perhaps post pictures?

Generally speaking excess 5¼" drive bays aren't useful for anything because in most cases (but not all) they are blocked so no airflow comes in. Thus, anything shoved in them will of course not block any airflow at all as there was none to begin with.

Are we talking about those slot fans that you put in a PCI slot?

What I can do is give you the dimensions: The case is 17" high, 8 " wide and 16" long.
It has 4 - 5 1/4 drive bays and the top 2 are occupied. I was studing it from the outside and the 2 availabe bays look spacious. It is tough to visualize, though, without the new power supply actually here. I guess I will have to wait and see once it is installed. Thanks!

P.S. yeah, I am not really concerned about air-flow being affected if the extra wires
are stuffed in the avaialble 5 1/4" slots!
