I'm looking to buy a gaming headset. Corsair Void headsets look fine.

But should i buy the usb version , or the 3.5mm version? I use the onboard sound chip of the Asus max Hero VI.

While some say ,its a gimmick. I like the 5.1 sound from Logitech G930 .
If i go with the stereo version of Corsair Void, is there a software that does the same thing?
AFAIK , only usb version supports virtual 5.1.

There are a couple ways to get surround from the 3.5mm version. One is with a soundcard that can do DTS Connect or DOlby Digital Live and an Astro Mixamp via optical from the soundcard. The second is to have the soundcard software do the surround processing. The Asus motherboard you listed cannot do that, but their newer ones can.

I tried Razer Sound , if i could get a 3d sound from a Shure 440(3.5mm stereo jack).
It was ok. I unistalled it, restart, and got a BSOD . BSOD are very rare these days , unless it is a very badly coded driver etc. So can't rely on this for the new headphones.

New asus motherboards has support for surround. But how good are they ?

Another option is to buy a USB sound card that supports surround. Creative Sound Blaster Omni Surround 5.1 , fits the bill.

Does anyone have experience with this Creative device? they weren't very good with their drivers in the past.

I haven't used a creative product in years but don't remember really having issues with it.
