I recommended that my stepbrother get a TX650 not much longer after I had received my TX850 in 2009. My TX850 has been through a lot -- An OC'd Q6600 + Dual OC'd 4890s. Now it's powering my 2500k machine which doesn't have nearly the power requirements of before.

My stepbrother with the TX650 was running it in an AMD Phenom x4 machine with a single 4890. Dead in 2 years. Crackles when it powers on, can spin fans OK but if you hook up a hard drive or the motherboard...nothing.

In the process of RMAing... I just thought these things were supposed to be solid PSUs!

Yeah, sounds like youre kind of making assumptions here and blaming the PSU. Its not a good sign that you dont know if it has surge protector or not lol. I always make sure all our computers have one. I didnt know some people still plugged their computers straight to the wall....

Anyways, they are good quality PSU's so its a moot point. The simple fact of the matter is, technology can fail. Even things that are quality made can fail. As you said, they have a 5 year warranty so not really an issue. Youll get a new one.

At least the power supply failure didn't take down the rest of his components like a cheaper unit probably would have.
I have a 3 year old TX650 that still works, although it's not in a system currently, but it was working at least three months ago when I last used it. I heard that it's bad to leave a power supply sitting around for too long, can anyone confirm this?

Exactly - bad PSU's go and take everything else with them. Never heard that it was bad to leave a PSU laying around, assuming it's stored properly. Probably better for it than leaving it on 24/7.

While I normally agree with the "bad PSUs take out the rest of the system with them" idea, I haven't seen it happen in a long time.

My HX520W is right at 5 years old. When the warranty run out I took it apart and blew out the dust real good. I then put it back together with the fan grill on the outside to cure the clicking that is sometimes did.
