I was just wondering....

In this article: http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=873&page=6

...in the second to last paragraph it says that these DIMMs "are rated for 2-2-2-5 at 200 MHz". But on the corsair website, it says "2-3-2-6" by the name of this RAM. Have the timings from PCStats come out of thin air? Or are the Corsair modules rated to go to these speeds by upping the RAM voltage?

In any case, I can't find out how high corsair rates these modules in terms of overclocking/increasing the voltage. I've looked around on their website but I can't find the Voltage they are rated up to anywhere.

:(

Any help is much appreciated

Corsair had to back down the timings on the 3200LL because certain popular motherboard chipsets (i865 and i875) have a problem running at super-low latencies even though the RAM itself has no problem handling it. I don't know why PCStats says 2-2-2-5 but I suspect they've got outdated information.

Bigger picture: What motherboard/CPU combo do you have, and what is your goal? :)

I am hoping to get either an Athlon64 3000+ OR one of the S939 Athlon64 3700+'s. I hope to get some very good timings from it, hopefully, 2-2-2 but maybe 2-3-2 since some people have said that Athlon64's cant handle DIMMS at their rated tRCD speeds. They say this problem will be fixed when the "CG" revision of the Athlon64's comes out. Would the S939 3700+ be one of those? If it is then I hope to achieve 2-2-2 timings.

They say that extremely low latencies are what benfits A64's the most.

Will the S939 Processors with a higher Hypertransport speed be able to run higher than DDR400? Maybe DDR500?

Thanks again.

:)

I could tell you, but then I'd be making stuff up as I went along :D Ace's Hardware did some tests of the Athlon 64 3400+ at CAS 3 and CAS 2, and found that in most cases the improvement was not very much... here's the page with those findings: link Nothing wrong with having tight timings, but don't expect a radical change in performance. I think you will see AMD stick with PC3200 and then concentrate on adding DDR-II support.

My A64 3000+ should be arriving ~Wednesday and I'm just going to re-use my Corsair XMS 3200C2 on it, as long as it's cooperative. If you're building a gaming system, I would steer you towards spending your big dineros on the best video card you can afford first, and extra-low-latency memory only if you have that much money left over :)

Thanks again for you help.

:)

You wouldn't happen to know of a "silent" 9800XT would you? I am looking at a Hercules 9800 Pro which is rated at only 28dB. The performance from the 9800XT isnt that much more than the 9800 Pro anyway is it? Maybe 10% at most? And from my point of view, the XT is £85 more expensive than the Pro, so it's not really worth it.

My system will hopefully look like this when I'm done:

Processor: Athlon64 3000+/3700+
Motherboard: TBD/See Processor
Graphics: Hercules 9800 Pro
Hard Drive: 2*Seagate Barracuda 120GB
RAM: Corsair 3200 Something (unsure which type now)
PSU: Zalman Noiseless 400W

I have about £1000 to spend on this new rig, so price isnt really an issue. But I don't want to be spending too much for a small increase in performance (as you pointed out from the RAM). Do you know of any sites that give memory latency speed comparisions on the A64 (EDIT: talking about detailed latencies rather than just CAS speed)?

Cheers

That's the best site I've seen so far. Really, the A64 already has such a headstart by not having a northbridge between it and the RAM... :) But I'll keep my eye open and PM you if I see anything interesting.

Silent Radeon 9800 Pro... that would be a good question to post over in the Video section and see what the Video gurus have to say. I did glue a Socket 7 CPU heatsink to my old GeForce2 GTS-V after its fan began failing with a loud buzzing noise, and Insane3D can take credit for inspiring that: Insane-ity :D

Well the Silent 9800XT is way too expensive so thats outta the question. Which leads me to believe that there aren't any easily affording upgrades to that listed above. I guess I'll just have to have that little extra cash in my pocket.

The ram you are refering to is know longer produced by Corsair I have the ram you are referring to and it is 2-2-2-5 as you stated that ram was created with the know discontenued B5 chips when i first installed it on my abit IC7-MAX 3 it showed up in bois by SPD 2.5-6-2-2 but sense i ran this memory on an older board bois by SPD showed 2-5-2-2 I new that SPD was wrong on my board so all i did was used user setting and set timing at 2-5-2-2 and it works great now if you want to guy this memory from me with a lifetime gaurantee I well sell it to you but I would be screwing you sense that memory is the same price as pc4200 you can buy that memory and run it at pc3200 at the setting you referred to 2-5-2-2 and the intel chipset has zero problems with these fast timing setting your good buddy Zinn2b
