Anyone here run 4x512 mods of ram with different version numbers and how is it working for you. I just received 2 more 2x512 mods of xms3200c2pt ram but I'm affraid to open the package and install it because on corsair's website it says it's best to have ram with same version #'s..

Should I RMA before I open it and just go with 2x1gig sticks and I'm not a big overclocker but like to have it available. Should I just stick with xms c2 ram or what do you recommend?

Hmm, it might work, modern mobo's can handle different types of RAM, and yet make them run in Dual Channel configs... If you hadn't come up with the idea of swapping them for 2x1GB sticks, I would have let you open the package... If you're however planning on changing them, that would be a more advisable thing to do...

I open the package:D And istalled them, but I now run at 166mhz dual channel..

I'm running current bios 1017 and my options are

Currently set at 1:1 DDR 200

Would picking one of these possibly bring me back to 200mhz?
4:3 DDR 266
3:2
5:3 DDR 333
2:1 DDR 400

Thanks for your help.

Sorry, forgot to answer the part about good RAM... The Corsair RAM you name is of course very fast RAM, but those will probably cost a lot of money... I'm thinking of some $240 or more...

G.Skill is a lot cheaper, and every bit (pun intended) as good, you can get 2x1GB Dual Channel memory of their Extreme Series for just $ 206.50, which looks like a very interesting deal to me...

Others are OCZ Platinum (currently $ 207.95 after $ 35 M-I Rebate), Kingston HyperX (no 2GB DC kits on Newegg unfortunately), and Mushkin High-Performance ($ 228)...

All the aforementioned sticks have a Cas Latency of 2... If you prefer paying less for a Cas Latency of 2.5 (not bad either!), take these G.Skills, they are currently about the best bang for the buck when it comes to 2GB of dual channel RAM with nice timings... They will be more than sufficient for your needs...

Hope I helped!

Erm... You probably still have a Newcastle or a Winchester core of CPU...? Don't you? They can't let the RAM run @ 400 MHz then... Your best bet is to set the divider, and overclock them... This is going to become an overclocking experiment... Funny... :p

To do so, put your RAM on the 5:6 divider (so its speed should actually still be 166MHz), and start gradually by raising your "FSB"... You'll have to lower your multiplier from 10 to 9, and lower your HTT to 4...

The "FSB" you should try to get is 240MHz, at that point, your RAM should have risen too, and will be @ 200MHz... Your CPU, however, will have been a little overclocked... To 2.16GHz to be precisely... Well yeah, it's going to run a bit faster eh then... No big deal...

Have you overclocked before? Otherwise just ask... Better asking than ruining it...

Sorry, my mistake, an E3 is a Venice... Hmm that's actually very strange, they're ought to support 4 different sticks of memory... Try the overclocking stuff, or try setting the RAM higher than your "FSB", it should be with a divider of 6:5 then... If you have that one in your BIOS...

EDIT: Seems like the K8T800 Pro in your ASUS mobo doesn't lock the PCI and AGP bus by itself... You will have to run it at a 1/7 divider then... Don't know about your AGP... It should be something like 1/3.5... Look it up in your BIOS... Maybe those dividers aren't really needed and can the buses be locked...

In my experience (and please correct me if I am wrong)

AMD64s choke on 4 sticks of RAM. I had a 3200+ Winchester core that only took 2 sticks of RAM... 4 would kill the timings.

It might not be possible run to 4 sticks at any decent speed.

I would think about a 2x1GB configuration if you badly need 2 GBs, although I think you'll find 1 GB is fine for most of your applications.

Just a thought.

EDIT: By the time I typed this up, it was outdated. Darn internet moves so quickly.

I have the venice core and it does work with a 2:1 divider at 400mhz...:)

So I have 4x512 xms mods running at spec dual channel:D

It started out lowering my speed to 166mhz but that little tweak fixed it..

Guys over at the corsair forums helped some too.. thanks!
