I just picked up a Corsair HX650W not too long ago and the pci-e power cables worry me a bit. I'm kind of surprised that I haven't seen anyone complain about this. Do they really expect me to power a GTX280 with this?

Yes that is one cable.

Apparently, either GTX280 owners buy something else, or Corsair HX650W PSUs powering GTX280s have not been catching on fire/exploding.

I just don't see how a single 6 pin should be feeding two 6+2 pin connectors on a supposedly high end psu.

If don't care for the corsair's 650w 6+2 pin cable. You could get the corsair 750w version which has four 6+2 pin connectors. Each one will be on its own power cable. Then you could sell off the 650w corsair.

Then I wouldn't be going with corsair. I do like the Seasonic Xseries gold.

I'm using two cables now but it's a pain having two cables bunched up at the bottom of my case when I'm using a modular psu. I just don't understand the design. A 650w PSU should be more than enough to power my rig.

I'm not sure what case you are using for the system. You could try doing some cable management if there is enough room for it. I'm using the Antec 1200 case with cable management behind the motherboard tray.

I could but the molex from the aftermarket fans is already taking up enough space back there. I'll probably move them behind the motherboard try the next time that I clean out the fan filters.

When I ran my cables behind the motherboard tray. I used these from the link below and tied them down. Making things really neat and easy to follow if I need to fix anything later.

Yes, they do, and yes, it's fine. There are people out there powering 5970s with those cables without incident.

Apparently, that's the case, but I do understand BababooeyHTJ's concern. Even if you have all those wires to carry the current, it's odd that multiple wires would go to a single connector to the PSU. I kinda wonder that if all those wires are capable of carry some large current, how is it possible that the single connector can handle all the current put together?

My Enermax Revo has a similar cable configuration and i don't have any problem, have ran a GTX 280 a 4890 both without any issues.

The wire gauge is more than sufficient to handle the amount of current drawn by current GPUs. Remember, you don't get 100% of your GPU power through the secondary PCI-e connectors. 75w comes from the slot.
