what's a good ram you guys would recommend? I'm staying away from OCZ, from what I've heard from them...

My brand loyalty is obvious so I won't even make a brand recommendation. IMO, a 1600C7 or 1600C8 kit would be a great choice based on your CPU and stated goal of 4GHz. The brand is up to you of course.

as long as the ram is rated at stock jedec voltage - give it a shot - pot luck.

it means the 1333mhz ram you are buying will run at 1666mhz at standard oem voltage levels.

ie. ddr2-800 1.8V marketed as DDR2-1066 @ 2.1v = FAIL.

all of that memory you are buying that is > 1333 is really just hand picked 1333 that can go faster at stock voltage or higher than stock voltage.

you want to start with the ram that has the lowest voltage rating. since it all is essentially the same chips they bin them. Grade A runs at stock voltage at 1800mhz grade B needs +.1v grade C needs +.2V etc.

I'm partial to the ripjaws kits cause they tend to be cheaper than corsair kits, but corsairs support is top notch, and the dominator kits are binned to be overclockable, so it's up to you really. I guess it just depends on how much you like yellowbeard if something goes wrong with them xD

I've been generally brand-loyal to Corsair, but unfortunately, performance memory doesn't mean much these days in terms of overclocking. Back in the s939 days it was a different story (as, IIRC, memory clocks meant a whole hell of a lot more in terms of performance).

Dominators do look the best, though. :p

Damn it!! they don't sell dominators in a 3x4GB config... Looks like it's gonna be down to 3 brands:

G.Skill Ripjaw
Mushkin Silverline
or the spotty OCZ Reapers

or maybe a 6x2GB Dominators :)

actually I read a few reviews saying that dominators are NOT very compatible with EVGA motherboards (I have the EVGA x58 LE board)... So I guess dominators are out of the game :'(

If I had to choose between these three I would go with G.Skill. Their products are top notch and their RMA dpt was there when I needed them.

OTOH I never needed Corsair's RMA services and their support is excellent.

no kiddng ram should never fail. i've had like 2 sticks out of 1000+ in my pc lifetime come DOA, and 1 stick go bad (may have always been bad) in a particular machine - but not every machine. Probably didn't regard the SPD correctly.

yea if it's between those 3 3x4gb kits then DEFINITELY go with the G.Skill. OCZ has been getting a lot of shoddy feedback lately and while mushkin is supposed to be good, i just dont hear as much about them anymore, so i dont have anything to compare them based on. G.Skill has always served me well, since about 2003 when i got my first 1GB DDR sticks from them :D

From what i see @ newegg for 3x4 GB kits, i'd get these
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820226096

It might be a bit harder to OC heavily 6x2 GB than 3x4 GB, but hard to say for sure, as both are less common configs.

Just like each time you see a memory IC density progression, it will depend on how well the ICs needed for a 4GB module will scale. There is no telling yet just how these newer 256MB ICs are going to scale just yet. All of the initial 3 x 4GB kits are rated at 1333 which is pretty slow. You can find 6 x 2GB certified for 1866. But, I'm sure the 4GB modules will catch up before long.

Any reason why 1600C7 (DomGT) is so darn picky with X58 boards?
One day I have 10GB, another 8GB, kick the box - er power cycle and see all 12GB. Quite frustrating and even worse I have to put in Crucial Ballistix Tracers that can't muster CAS7 - but they always register 12GB even if wet. Speaking of wet they need to get wet they run over 150F! :eek:

how fast can we OC 1333?

That would vary depending luck, skill, voltage applied, etc.

Keep in mind for your i7 920, let's say you were OCing the CPU @ 20x200.

Here are some common available RAM ratios you'd get for that:

6x = DDR3-1200 (see why we say you don't need high end RAM?)
8x = DDR3-1600
10x = DDR3-2000

With the 6x ratio, you can basically use value DDR3 & still OC the CPU like mad...no high end RAM needed really.

I personally am running 20x200 myself right now w/ RAM @ DDR3-1600 7-7-6 as my system has fits if i try to use the 10x ratio :(

I wouldn't obsess about getting your 12GB in a 3 x 4GB set. I've got a 6 x 2GB set of Dominators in my i7 920 setup, Asus RII Gene motherboard, and have had no problems getting my 920 to 4GHz and beyond with all 6 slots populated.
