You shouldn't have an issue unless it comes down to connectors. I ran 2 7970's @ 1115/1625 and a 2600k @ 4.9Ghz with 5 hard drives and a H100 with no issues on a AX750. At the wall the most I got was 620w. People recommend 1000w PSU's for Celeron builds it seems like these days.

All you need is a bit of math skills and a quality PSU.

You're not overclocking the CPU and not going crossfire with that motherboard.

Sure, it's enough. You will probably only have about 100W left over, so very little room for overclocking or upgrading.

First off, the VX550 has decent quality caps, it won't have lost much of its maximum capacity in 4 years. Secondly, the unit has peak wattage much higher than the rated wattage (e.g. hardwaresecrets' review of VX450), so the rated wattage is for continuous load.

Since a stock clocked i5 system without a graphics card consumes <100W at full load, and a Gigabyte 280X consumes about 250W at full load, you can assume load when gaming to be between 300-350W. There's still 200+ watts of capacity left in the PSU, minus capacitor wear.

Sorry I was off 70 watts (after capacitor wear). And sorry I am not a expert on 5 year old Power Supply's. Dude, seriously?

What's the problem? My post was in no way inflammatory or anything like that. Don't feel bad :). I just found your post somewhat inaccurate, and wanted to correct it since I want to be precise about these things.

When in doubt, can find decent info on PSUs from realhardtechx.com, hardwaresecrets.com and jonnyguru.com

Yes. If you were building a new system with a new power supply, a quality 550W unit would be fine. And I don't see four years being long enough time for degradations becoming an issue on a 550W unit with Japanese made 105°C solid capacitors.

However since it IS 4 years old, only 80 Plus rated, and you're probably going to run out of warranty in 1 year, I would recommend buying a new unit (with Bronze efficiency, preferably Gold) in about 1 year. So it's really up to you if you want to buy a new unit now or in 1 year. Also keep in mind that the sooner you upgrade, the better price you can get for your used unit on eBay, for instance.
