Corsair 400R or 500R

I have not built a rig with either cases but I'm definitely very interested in these cases for my next build. The 500R has a fan speed controller of which the 400R does not have. The HDD cage for the 500R is much more flexible which is present in cases like the 600T.

Removing the top half of the HDD cage would be less restrictive to the fan in the front. Side panel of the 500R has more fan size options.

If given a choice I would choose either a 400R or the white 500R.

I don't think 500R is worth 60% more in price. More like 20-30%, and only for systems that actually benefit from the improved cooling e.g. dual-GPU setups.

400R all the way. The cheaper the Corsair cases go the better they get I think 🙂

I've been stockpiling components for an IB build as they go on sale, and the white 500R caught my eye back in the summer...$79 AR is awfully tempting.

Not sure I love the white case considering my entire room is essentially black. I'm kinda avoiding it. Too bad the black isn't on sale. Don't love the graphite color of the 400R, but at $69 it's a bit of a steal right now (although $13 shipping for the 400r).

Does anyone know how the stock fans in either case are? If I go with the 400R (which looks likely), I'll probably add a top and side fan, and go with the Enermax T.B. SILENCE fans. Would it be worth replacing the stock?

The stock front fans are just fine unless you want a totally silent rig. I'd recommend getting a pair of filters for the side intakes to reduce the amount of dust that might go in. I bought a pair of 140mm Silverstone filters that are magnetic and it fits nicely on the 400R.

Then 400R doesn't have side intake fans, although I'd like to go ahead and add one and an exhaust for the top. Could you suggest any fans? I was looking at the Scythe Slipstream or the Enermax TB Silence 140MM's.

I'm not a SPCR member so my knowledge on silent fans are fairly limited. Regarding the 2 fans you've mentioned, you could probably go with the Enermax but I prefer the more common and more variety 120mm fans. Slim fans are not necessary as there is a bulge at the side panel.

I actually ended up purchasing the 400R. If the 500R goes on sale for Cyber Monday I'll likely go ahead and buy it and return the 400R to Tiger Direct.

I really like the 500R's removable drivebay, the full black coloring, fan control, and additional filters. I do wonder however if on the most recent 500Rs fix the issues I've heard about (wobbly frame, drivebay too tight, noisy fan/side panel).

For the 500R, what fans did you add to the case (if any)?

I didn't have any of those issues - at least I didn't notice any of them.

There really seems to be plenty of circulation with the standard case fans, and the ones from the H100. So the only fan I added was actually the fan from the stock Intel CPU cooler which was left over when using the H100. I am using it as a ram cooler. In the process of making a mounting bracket for it for more of a permanent mount.

No good Cyber Monday deals on the 500R so I stuck with my 400R purchase. Kinda regretting not just shelling out the extra $40 for a sleeker case with better airflow, but the 400R will do me just fine.

Let's just hope the Shell Shocker deal on the Fractal R3 won't make me return my 400R.

I would not regret it too much - the 400R is by no means an inferior case, and I would be surprised if the airflow characteristics are much different (if at all) than the 500... I was really on the fence about it.
