Corrupted Word/Excel file recovery?

Is there a program or a way to repair a corrupted WORD 03 (.doc) and EXCEL (.xls) file?

I transferred files from an NFTS drive to FAT32 and now I can't open the word files. I get a permissions and path error, but these are fine. I've even tried renaming and relocating to another directory but to no avail.

The funny thing is that I can WORD files by doing OPEN WITH --> NOTEPAD and I can see the text but not the format (lines, boxes, etc.)

I've also already tried the FILE--> OPEN AND REPAIR procedure & complete SCANDISK but they didn't fix anything.

Any software or tips?

in the latest maximumpc magazine (not the regular one, but the fixit/repair tips one) has an article about recovery programs. sorry i dont have the link, but it has a thing about a free program download that was designed to recovery microsoft office corrupted files to recover them. they gave it a good review, i do remember that.
 
I've gotten OpenOffice to read corrupted Word files before. Then save a copy and you're golden. I'd give it a shot if you don't mind installing OO. Gmail might work too.
