Corrupted USB drive: Flash drive repair/recovery?

Do you know anything about flash drive repair/recovery? A friend has a bunch of files on a corrupted USB drive, and it was never backed up. (Most file and folder names are squares, and gibberish, etc)
They are freaking out.

Is this one legit?

Thumb drives and smart cards are real hit or miss. A common cause for corruption is pulling the card out of the computer while it is still writing a file. In cases I have personally seen, there is no recovery for this type of zapping. There are some free recovery tools, but again, very hit or miss.

Not sure about your linked fixer outfit - if the data is very important, it might be worth a try. I have never dealt with them. Flash drives are convenient for transporting data. That data should always be on another HDD or two. I would never rely on flash media for permanent, sole storage.
 
Try some advanced file browser, once it just ignored that flash drive is corruped and copied all files. Try 3-4 totally different browsers, but same as corkyg's advice: it's hit or miss.
