Corrupted screen at POST, Windows won't recognize 8800 GTX

Hello,

Today I noticed some strange artifacts on my screen starting to randomly develop, and after several switches between a blank screen and the desktop, the system restarted itself. I was concerned to see there were several vertical lines down the screen at the POST screen of my ASUS P5Q. The system does boot into Windows 10, but it loads a generic Microsoft driver. I tried reinstalling the latest nVidia drivers (341.95 WHQL). The drivers appeared to install succesfully, but upon restart the same problems remain. In the Device Manager under nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX it states "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43)".

My suspicion is that my video card has finally died. However, I can't say with 100% confidence this is the issue, since I still have a usable display. I can't go higher than 1024x768 without artifacts appearing. Has anyone seen a similar problem and/or have any suggestions?

If it is time for a new video card, any recommendations? I'd like to be able to play 3D games at 2560x1440.

System specs:
Windows 10 64 bit Pro
ASUS P5Q
Intel E8400 3.0 GHz
nVidia 8800 GTX
8 GB RAM
240 GB SSD boot drive

Yeah, you would need a new card to play half-way modern games at that resolution, no matter if your current card is defective or not. Really, you need a platform upgrade too.

Had a similar problem about 6 months ago, when my old Nvidia card called it quits. All my tools were not available so brought it to Micro Center and for a total of $130 they verified what I thought had failed, put in a new Nvideo card and it's proper driver and all was well. Then of course, about 3 months later my old Dell Sony style CRT Monitor called it quits. Picked up a new Dell S2340M from Best Buy for $130 (rather nice and not too costly)

I'm not ready to build a new system, maybe in a year or two. The 8800 GTX can play some games at 2560x1440 now...I have played Lego Hobbit on steam at this resolution. Granted, it doesn't run at 60fps, but I don't need that. I'm not looking to play that latest games at all, much less at high res.

It's not really a requirement that it be 2560x1440, but I'd like it to handle older games at resolutions that look decent.

I'm trying to decide between a GTX 950 and a GTX 750 Ti. I'm not sure if it matters given my current mobo/CPU.

I would get the GTX950 over the 750ti. The only real draw to the 750ti, was that it didn't require a 6-pin power connection. Since the 8800GT (most of them) do, then you already likely have the PSU necessary for the GTX950. Plus, it should have much better resale value.

It is capable of HEVC (H.265) decode, Main10 profile, in hardware, and has HDMI 2.0 for 4K TVs.

I don't know if they are for sale yet, but there are GTX950 cards without a power connector.

I installed a new GTX 950 today, what a difference in performance, even with my old mobo/CPU.
