Corrupted Hard Drive

I have a Maxtor 80GB ATA100 7200rpm drive that recently became corrupted. When I try to access the drive the error msg I get is "File or directory is corrupted and unreadable." I had filled a good 30GB+ with data and really don't want to lose it. On the other hand, I'm not going to pay thousands of dollars to get it back. Does anyone know of a good data recovery solution out there or have any tips on recovery?

I am especially angered because this is my second new Maxtor drive witin a year that has gone bad. Anyone else having trouble with Maxtor quality?

Thanks,
