Strange problem just discovered:
3 PC peer-to-peer network:
PC1--->Switch/Router<---100ft<---Hub<---PC2+PC3

TCP/IP with no File Sharing (for internet)
NetBEUI with File Sharing for LAN access

Internet is OK, no corruption

Local File transfer (large files only) from and to PC2 corrupts files
starts after 2-3MB transfer.

PC1 and PC2 have same linksys NIC
PC1, PC3 is WinME
PC2 in Win98SE

Any ideas?

Sounds like a duplex mismatch somewhere, since you have the hub, hardcode all to half duplex in the network settings, as you are probably overloading the buffers on the switch (at full duplex) from your workstation when it has to delay and wait for collisions for the hub.

Thanks Xanathar
I'll try it tonight.

Looks like the hub is the only half-duplex device on the network!
Will it help to buy switch instead of hub?

Ark: I have the same problem with one of my boxes (all Win2k). I haven't really messed with it since detecting the corruption, but I'll fire it up tonight and report what I find (if anything). BTW, I'm using a switch. Maybe you (and I) should be looking at NIC settings?

Also, you might want to run a thorough virus scan on that PC. It couldn't hurt. :)

Here is update:
half duplex did not help - same thing.

Removing NetBEUI file sharing and activating it on TCP/IP fixed the problem.
So looks like this is NetBEUI on Win98SE machine, WinME machines are fine.

Also traced corruption to "send" file from Win98 machine, recieve is OK.
Any way, I'll install ME on this machine this weekend,
Will se if it helps.

Thank Guys.

It's odd that removing F&P sharing from NetBEUI would make that sort of difference. Many of us have NB instead of TCP/IP-bound shares with no problems... Maybe the Windows files responsible for NB on that particular box are corrupted. I haven't used Win98 in awhile; is there any "sfc" program? Regclean probably wouldn't do any good.

Installing WinME fresh (no upgrade) should help.
