Corrupted email attachments (large files)

I am having a problem with one of the computers I built earlier this year. I cannot download or receive large files. (over 1.2 meg or so). This is mainly a problem with email, all files over about 1 ? 1.2 meg are corrupted. I have tried several types of files and even sending them to myself they come back corrupt. I am guessing that this has t do with OE having the breakup large files to send them and then putting them back together, since smaller files that do not have to be broken up I can receive fine.

I have noticed that about 50% of the time when I download large files off the net they are corrupted when I try to run them. (Example ? NVIDIA update drivers received as a corrupted file, but I could download Norton Anti-virus with no problems.)

I thought that this might be an TCP/IP problem so I reloaded them from the XP disk and when that didn?t fix my problem I formatted and reinstall all over again. I am using the following hardware and OS.

ASUS A8N, Opteron 165, 2 Gig memory, 2 X 160 drives setup in a raid 1. I am using XP pro as an OS and Outlook Express for email.

I have searched and cannot find any mention of this problem. If any of you have had this problem or know how to fix it please post.

Thanks for your time.

I assume you have a built-in Nvidia NIC?

If so, you might take a look at your drivers for the NIC. There've been some issues with TCP/IP and the Nvidia drivers. I imagine this could cause the corruption of large downloads.

Did you see RebateMonger's post?

Are you running an NVidia NIC? Have you looked for updated drivers for the NIC/Chipset?

What's the deal with some of the nForce 4 features? I mean I have heard not one good thing about it, especially that firewall they have.

I've never used an NVidia-chipset motherboard, so I can't comment from experience. I DO know that on these Forums, I've read of problems with the NVidia network drivers, the firewall, and the RAID drivers.

I really HATE to sound like an Intel snob, but several years ago I decided to stick with Intel-chipset motherboards. Dumb incompatiblity problems were something that I just didn't want to bother with. ---My opinion, only....

This is *almost always* the result of either a mildly unstable CPU, or a bad NIC (or a corrupted network driver, which could include things like the firewall functionality). A bad Ethernet cable or port is another slim possibility (but TCP has error correction built in, so usually this would make it run slowly or drop connections but not give you corrupted files). There is a slim possibility that it is actually the motherboard that is bad (ie, corrupting data coming from the NIC over the PCI bus).

To check for an unstable CPU/RAM, use memtest86+ (run it overnight; ANY errors indicate bad/unstable memory) and Prime95's torture tests (try the 'Blend' test for at least 12 hours; ANY failures indicate unstable CPU/RAM).

If that checks out, it's probably your NIC. Replace it; if you're using an onboard one, RMA the board or switch to a standalone NIC to try to isolate the problem. You may want to try it with a different Ethernet port (on the switch/router) and cable if possible first, since that doesn't require cracking open the box.

It is possible for ethernet's auto speed sensing to get things wrong, as described here:
http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/network/autosense.html

One symptom is a lot of lost packets and very slow apparent internet speed (occasionally it works OK when autonegotiate gets it right). Another symptom is corrupted downloads. The problem occurs with newer NIC's capable of 1000mb; older machines don't know about these high speeds so they won't make this autonegotiate error.

I changed full autonegotiate to "Autonegotiate for 100FD". This is found in Device Manager/Network Adapters/Advanced/Speed-Duplex Settings.

This didn't fix everything - I still get net dropouts - but it did help some. Surprisingly, it cured a problem with occasional distorted jpg's like this one: http://img370.imageshack.us/img370/8874/fi...istorted6gh.jpg

Easy to do and worth trying.

There are a number of corruption problems that many users think are caused by nVidia drivers or chips, visit their forum for more info: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?s=f3...ead353326152f9b12af806c46&showforum=34

Unfortunately, nVidia neither confirms nor denies the corruption problems so users are left to determine what causes their particular problem.

Thanks RebateMonger, GadgetBuilder and everyone else that posted: My Dad installed the NVIDIA Firewall and according to the posts on the NVIDIA web site it is causing alot of problems. I have the same chip set on my computer with a slightly different MB (A8N-SLI) but mine did not come with the NVIDIA Firewall software and I have not had any problems.

I have not been back to my Dads to test if this is actually the problem but I can not think of anything else. I will remove the firewall and post update...

Thanks again for all the help.
