corrupt registry popup

I just did a new windows install on my cousins computer. I know that it had the trojan horse virus, so I did a clean reformat and reinstall. Now every 4-5 minutes a popup comes up saying that there's a corrupt registry and that I should go to some website to get it fixed. I ran virus scan and spyware check and nothing came up.

What's causing this? Wouldn't a full format and reinstall get rid of all the virus and spyware?

it's a "messenger" service popup. The internet is flooded with them. Disable the messenger service (not the MSN messenger) and/or get a firewall to block the ports (think the are 1026/1027? Can't remember, haven't checked firewall logs)

One of the very first things you should always do just after finishing your windows install and definately BEFORE you make any attempt to connect to the internet, is to disable the MESSENGER SERVICE, like the other replier suggested. First stop the service and then set it to DISABLE.

If you don't have a built-in firewall, install the free version of Zone Alarm, again BEFORE you make any attempt to connect to the internet.

Good luck.
