Hey guys, new to the forum, but not to Anandtech in general.

I recently brought a firewire external hard drive enclosure, and it's currently running with an Western Digital 40GB. For the most part, it works fine, but every once in a while, when I try to access it, it would give me a "file or directory is corrupt" message. Usually, this fixes itself if i run checkdisk on it, but I lose roughly half my files on the disk.

I'm running Windows XP SP2
The external case is a Sanmax HD-338 ( http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=17-123-116&depa=0 )
It is running a 7200rpm WD 40GB HD (formated under NTFS)
and connected to my laptop via a Ziplinq retractable firewire cable

Any ideas as to what may be the problem?

Thanks
-Ken

It is possible that the data is getting corrupted because the drive is getting too hot. This is a common problem with enclosures.

hrmm i don't think so, this enclosure has an exhaust fan built in (one of the main reasons i chose it), and feeling on the case, everything seems pretty cool. I'll bet good money my laptop hard drive runs a lot hotter than the external
