correct way to perform a salute?

I'm not sure about how to perform a salute, but I believe whenever you walk by a higher ranking official, you salute.

(For the US)

Your upper arm should be parallel to the ground, your lower arm should be at ~45 degrees. The tip of the middle finger should touch the right-hand bill of your hat / cap where it joins the body of the hat / cap.

The hand should be rotated such that only the edge of the hand is visible from the front, or perhaps rotated to a slightly pinky-finger-down position (showing the back of your hand slightly).

You only slaute officers and specific VIPs. You never salute other enlisted or NCOs (corporals, sargents, Petty Officers) ... only "The Brass." They have you salute NCOs in Boot Camp, just to get you in the practice ... after that, Officers and Warrant Officers only.

Depending on the service, you may or may not have to salute indoors and / or you may or may not have to salute when not covered (wearing a hat), or wearing a duty belt.

FWIW

Saluting an officer you despise in a combat zone, particularly while in the field, results in unbelieveable hilarity as the officer dives for cover! 😀

Oh, the point of my post is that you are not required to salute officers when their is a good chance that by doing so he would be identified by the enemy as an officer and blow away post haste. 😛

Salutes are not required when:

Indoors, unless reporting to an officer or when on duty as a guard.
A prisoner.
Saluting is obviously inappropriate. In any case not covered by specific instructions, render the salute.
Either the senior or the subordinate is wearing civilian clothes.

Haha! 😀

i heard something about the differences between salutes in the US and in Australia. in one, the commanding officer breaks the salute, in the other the lower ranking man breaks the salute. so if two officers from either country salute each other, they'll be stuck in the salute for a long long time.
