i was watching mtv and they had the britney spears diary where they follow her around doing stuff. one part was her working out.. she was bragging that she does 500 situps/abdominal exercises a day. and sometimes 1000 when she's felling good. Thing was when they showed her doing them, she was bouncing side to side doing side bends and crunches she was also doing the same thing..

i thought and read in a few books that you dont need to do hundreds, or even 1000's of crunches to get defined abs. the way i do it, slow movements, and stop at the top of the crunch for a second, then lower and repeat.. which is more important, quality or quantity?

she even had her personal trainer there which is why im asking the question. i would think if she was doing it wrong, he'd tell her and show her the proper way to do it. she does have a nice tummy and pleasant looking body.. ;)

Think of it as sprinting and running marathons. Both achieve similar purposes, but lead to different directions.

The more you do the more definition you get. Although with sit-ups its really important to be doing them right, more so than the amount you do I guess..

Getting a six pack is also dependent on diet and genetics. Some people just can't get them no matter how much exercise they do.

The more i hear about Britnet, the less i think i would like her

It all comes down to body fat % you need to be 10% or under Most of the time.

Many studies show that slow exercise is actually more of a work out.
Working the muscle through the entire movement.

But Im not an expert.

If you were holding her feet and watching her do crunches to you..wouldn't you want quantity over quality?

hehe...maybe he gets paid by the hour?

That's if you're going for efficiency...

If you have the time, quality can always make up for quantity

Also, the question that should be asked is "Do you have a six-pack?"

You're right... QUALITY is absolutely more important than quantity in developing a good 6 pack. BUT, you also need to have a low fat percentage for that 6 pack to show. Some people have absolutely hard abs, but they don't have a 6 pack because their fat % is just too high.

What Britney does, is her 500-1000 situps is her cardiovascular workout. When she's doing those 500 situps, she's more burning her calories rather than defining her stomach... well, she is defining her stomach, but she could have had the same results with 50 situps.

Personally, there are much more effective ways of burning calories than situps. An hour of situps could have had the same cardiovascular results if she did a 20 min run... and it would be much easier on the back and neck.

It has to do w/fast twitch muscles...you build different ones when you do squats compared with the muscles you build with matharon running.

As for the 40/1000 question...

if you do a single situp that's 10 times as hard as one of Britney Spears' situps, then you can do 1/10th and have the same effect...

Hey btw, how come no one's posted any pics yet?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that to effectively build up a muscle it must be used for atleast 3 seconds at a time.

You don't have to settle for either. My homebrew costs me ~40 cents a bottle and about 4 hours of labor for 50 bottles. And it tastes just as good and most times better than any quality brew you can buy. I haven't drank swill like buttweiper since I was a frosh at college.

People who do "1000 situps a day" are morons. Quality over quantity always. Always for working out. Not only do you get better growth but its safer. Except in a very few amount of cases where there is a tangible benefit you will not find professional weight lifters throwing the weight around like morons. They do controlled excercises and nobody can do hundreds of situps the correct way.

From my experience and what I've read the vast majority of a person's stomach appearanceis gauged by fat. I no longer even bother with abs anymore. Doing them or not doing them I never found any difference in my size or tone. All I ever noticed was that if I lost weight my abs stuck out. Gain weight they went back in. I have found that regular weight lifting often brings abs into play as supportive muscles anyway. I suppose that they are worth doing if you're bored but in terms of at least how they look its almost entirely bodyfat percentage.
