Correct Internet Connect speed w/winmodem?

Yep, it's a POS winmodem. Aztech, I think.

It shows the port speed of 115,000. Before I upgraded to W2K from W98SE, it showed the correct connect speed, which on my line, has always been 26.4 or 28.8. At time of upgrade, amazingly, I found W2K drivers for this (figured I'd have to get a new modem. I cannot find newer drivers, and doubt they will make newer for this legacy product.

I swear I fixed this with another modem way back in W95, but can't for the life of me figger what I did then. It connects solidly, so that's not a problem. I'd just like to know the correct speed it is connecting at.....or at least close to the correct speed.

I'm thinking I need to put something in the initialization string? Currently, in properties, it shows nothing in the init string in W2K.

Suggestions of what to try, or a site with FAQs?
Thanks

You need an updated .inf file for the modem. You are probably connecting at a speed that is not defined in the .inf file so Windows just defaults back to the port speed in that case.

One other possibility is an incorrect init string. Most modems default to report the actual connect speed. Some do not so you need to have the proper code in the init string to have it report DCE speed and not DTE speed. (or the reversed, can't remember) The specific init string varies depending on modem brand/model.
