I'm cleaning up my kitchen in the condo I'm about to sell.

Found 3 bags of 'white stuff'......one's labeled pancake mix, the other two no labels. I'd like to keep them if they're flour. I'd discard it if its cornstarch.

How do I differentiate if its cornstarch or flour?

considering you'd be out about $6 total. I think you should toss 'em.

spreading on a compost pile would be ideal, but they'd be a nice orgainc component to a landfill as well.

Mix in a bowl, the unknown substance and water. Then punch into the mixture.
If it goes all over the place, it's probably flour.

video, example at 1:17.

How large are the bags? Cornstarch usually only comes in small packs less than a pound. If it's like 2-5 pounds, then more likely than not, it's flour.

Cornstarch is finer, becomes dense when wet, and usually comes in wax lined bags in a cardboard box. I doubt it's corn starch.

Is it alternator sized? About 10lbs?

I'd say it's probably powdered beef.

edit: in bulk.

This has got to be the most scientific answer so far :)

But not gonna try it coz I don't want to clean up especially when I'm trying to sell the place.

That's absurd. Just take a cup, put a tablespoon of the stuff into the bottom and pour water into it. Not enough that it's soupy. If it becomes elastic and doughy when you knead it with your fingers, it's flour. If it is just an ooze it is corn starch or something else.

They taste entirely different.

Can't differentiate from taste.

Why do you even want it if you don't know anything about it? You know five pounds of flour is about $1.50, right?

It's not the price. I hate trashing anything that can be put to use.

Problem solved. I gave all 3 bags to my next-door neighbor. She thinks that the smaller bag is cornstarch because of the container size
