Go to Cracker Barel and eat it there. Very authentic southern food. Only do it once a month though- some of their breakfasts have 150+ grams of fat

Is cornmeal mush the same thing as polenta?
Mostly, yes. technically, some corn meal you buy wouldn't end up as polenta, having been degerminated(sp). Technically this stuff should be polenta if it is whole corn meal.

I use olive oil instead of butter, and organic whole corn meal. Not as cheap as grits, but cheaper than Ramen (~$0.60 for something that can feed me, sans drinks, for a day and a half 🙂), and tastier.

Also, really good is taking the stuff and deep frying it in olive oil, and grating parmesan over it. Takes a long time, but it's good stuff. Edit: it likes to stick together, so if you have a net for the fryer(sp) that can press them down (so that they can't float in the oil and make contact), you might be able to make enough at a time to cook them faster than you can eat them 🙂

I have never eaten cornmeal mush, though it does sound good... so, I don't know what I'm missing.

OT: I am a regular cornbread eater...

Now on the subject on grits, hell... didn't even know what grits were til five minutes ago... never tried 'em.
