Update 10-26-06

"Okay, so Election Central has just obtained a radio ad which you've got to hear: It actually has what sounds like tom-tom drums playing in the background every time the ad talks about Dem Harold Ford, Jr. The ad -- which says it was paid for by the campaign of GOP Senate candidate Bob Corker -- can be heard right here. When the ad mentions Corker, the music soars and no tom-toms are audible. Throughout the entire minute-long ad, you hear the rumble of tom-toms every time Ford is mentioned. This ad, keep in mind, quotes Bob Corker himself as having "approved" the message -- meaning it wasn't the work of the Republican National Committee, as in the case of the recent "bimbo" TV ad which drew charges of racism. More after the jump."

Before seeing the previous two attack ads, I would have said that the idea that the idea of covert racism was a stretch. However, those ads allow me to question the intentions. I won't say for certain one way or the other, but I'll let you all be the judge.

And just a comment from one person from the site, who claims to be a drummer (although obviously this can't be authenticated, but maybe a few savvy musical ears can corroborate what he said):

Being a drummer myself- I've taught marching percussion at the college level and conducted clinics on that topic for high school-aged students, I can tell you that the use of tom-toms and the particular rythms used in the ad are common motifs of Afro-Cuban music. If you pay attention, you'll notice that the drums aren't even in synch with the rest of the music. The drums are playing at a tempo of about 110 BPM (beats per minute) while the other music is payed at about 50 BPM.

IMO this is a rather clumsy case of musical "cut-and-paste".

Can't say I blame him for using that. University of Tennessee is a big part of East Tennessee culture. Droves of alumni come out every weekend to tailgate at the football games. Corker's trying to appeal to that crowd.

Note: I currently attend UT, and I absolutely love it. But I won't tout it as being the beacon of intellect in the south.

OMG, tom-toms? Racist!!!

If TN voters were made to read this thread, Corker would win the election rather easily.

Democrats have lost their ability to fight, mainly because they no longer know which battles to fight.

All the D's need to do is repeat one word, over and over. Iraq. Iraq. Iraq.

No offense but the idea that the radio ad is racist seems even dumber to me than the idea that the TV ad is racist (and I thought that was pretty dumb). I really think it trivializes ACTUAL racism to call things this benign racist.

We are converting Don to the conservative side. Now we just need to get him to listen to Rush and Hannity for a few weeks and the conversion will be complete :)

No, it's just that unlike many of the conservative posters here, including you, I am capable of seeing more than one side to every story. I have voted for many Republicans, and will do so again. To me this is the weakness of morons like Rush, who just predictably take the conservative side of every debate (wait, that sounds familiar!). It's obvious to me in listening to his show that he doesn't even believe some of that nonsense - his diatribes are written for him, and nobody with a working brain could be that politically monomaniacal.

You must have missed Rush tear the hell of Republican senate candidate Kean from NJ.
He launched one hell of an attack on him.

I don't listen to Rush nearly as much as I used to, he seems to be more entertainment and less information than he was 10 years ago. Of course at that time he was the ONLY place for the right to go, now we have Fox and Hannity plus the net.

BTW: Edit your first sentence, doesn't make sense.

Edited. In case I didn't make it clear enough, Rush can fvck off. He has wrought awful harm on the quality of political discourse in this country. His sentiments on Michael J. Fox are typical of the caliber of his rhetoric - I think he is trying to amp up his outrageousness to keep up with the Joneses (aka Ann Counter et al). Too bad his sycophants, some of whom belong to this board, eat it up.

It looks to me like you don't actually listen to Rush. He spent the first hour yesterday back peddling from what he said.
Compared to Coulter or Savage Rush is a voice of reason. You don't get 13.5 million listeners by being a total idiot, despite what the left may thing.

Great, so he's an asshole AND a coward?

I don't think he's a total idiot - in fact I think he's smart in terms of crafting (with the help of a staff of writers) a laughably reactionary, fat-cat persona that appeals to the morons who listen to him. That doesn't make him a man I respect - on the contrary, I think he's a turd that should have been flushed many years ago.

What get's me is how Rush worships a statist big government guy like Bush..a guy who according to the Heritage foundation, grew govt spending by 45% 3x faster than a relativly fiscally conservative Clinton.... If Bush were a Democrat I suspect you'd hear a very differnet Rush Limbaugh. For some it's all about party, no morals, no character, no cosistancy... But he's still funny IMO...so is Franken.

From the radio ad:

"Harold Ford Junior inherited a life in politics."

Wow. So what exactly did Bush Junior do? Where's their attack ad on him?

I'll be happy as hell once voting season is over. If I have to watch one more damn Corker or Ford Jr. ad on TV I may just go on a crazed rampage. For the record, both of them are asshats, and neither are getting my vote. My vote will be going to David ?None Of The Above? Gatchell.
