Corgi - good breed for a first time dog owner?

Thinking about getting a pup from a friend who has one available. I've owned cats all my life so a dog would be a new experience. Just wondering if this would be a reasonable breed to start off with.

My wife and I got one about 1.5 yrs ago. It is my first dog and my wifes 3rd. I like the dog and they are well behaved and very nice. My corgi likes to play alot and run around hope you have a big back yard and time to devote to the dog as they require daily attention (mine did anyway). We had a very nice breeder and a very good blood line with ours. How much are you paying for it might I ask? a pet quality Corgi should go for around $400+ (I have a Pembroke welsh Corgi). A show ready dog expect to pay $1000+. She was easy to potty train btw only a few accidents then she figured it out, we have a doggy door.

how are they around kids? trying to convince the GF that it would be safe to have if we decided to have kids down the road. I heard that they sometimes bite at the heels since they are herding dogs.

$300 was quoted, plus i'd get the shots and whatever else. I was told that the 300 was about half of what she charged for others in the litter. Don't remember if she said it was a pembroke or the other variety (cardigan?)

As far as a "big" yard, what's big? My lot is about .45 acre, with about 3/5 of the space not occupied by the house itself being the back yard.

My corgi is great around my 4 and 6 yr old she protects them and loves to play with them. She is very gental as she grew up around them from a small puppy. She has never been aggressive with anyone but she is very curious around new people. I second the shedding comment. I vaccum her from time to time ;)

My friend had one and I didn't like it. He'd get really excited and pee himself.

that should be big enough they are working dogs (corgi is bread for cattle etc) they like to roam around a nice sized back yard not like a 20'X20' backyard and she will be fine.

Thanks for the input. One more question, do they get along okay with other pets?

For some reason I can just imagine the new pup excitedly running up to my cat to say "hi," the cat freaking out and giving the dog a beatdown with a set of sharp claws upside the nose and things deteriorating from there...

I have 4 cats and my Corgi they all get along fine. It will depend on your cats however, if your dog is raised near them she wont have a problem with the cats as mine loves to wrestle and play with a couple of them.

Corgis are AMAZING!

We have a Pembroke welsh corgi...Great family dog (great with everyone)...loves to sit around, loves to run around, has a manly bark (its funny)...
They do shed a lot, and like to chew on stuff.

Read up on em before buying though, but we really like ours. He's smart too.
And cute.

My 1st and only dog was a female corgi. They're very cute but they also remind me of a stuck up rich girl. Pretty on the outside but way too much energy, stubborn, and loud on the outside. Their barks are so sharp I swear it would make my ears start bleeding...they shed a LOT...and they are always running around...even at 4 years old. They are smart though and learn fast, but they really have way too much energy for me. I like more chill-slow moving dogs. But yeah....mine was afraid of feet (soles) probably cuz of a few accidental step-ons when she was smaller. When she was young she would piss herself if scared, but yeah as they get older they become very willful dogs and will sometimes suddenly stop listening. Loves to chew on random crap everywhere too...that was also annoying when mine was younger. And it took around 1.5 months to get housebroken. If you have a yard and want an energetic dog who would also make a great guard dog then yeah go for it...but don't be like me and just go for the "look" of it. Personality and breed hella matter.
