CoreTemp vs. SpeedFan

Which is more reliable, SpeedFan or CoreTemp?? I have an i7 build.

During Prime95, CoreTemp is showing core heat ranges between 90 - 100 degrees across all cores. However, during the same test, SpeedFan is showing core heat ranges between 78 - 85 degrees across the cores.

I'm confused.

I was planning on reseating my heatsink due to the high temps, but if 78 - 85 is the right range, then that isn't as bad as I thought since i7's run hot anyway.

okay, will try that when I get home tonight. If real temp still shows high temp, should I re-seat the heat sink/fan?

Will I have to clean the Artic silver 5 off, or can I reuse what is there?

Are the temps you listing in your OP Fahrenheit or Celsius? B/c if they are Celsius, they are way too high.

And you should clean and reapply AS5 anytime you remove/reinstall your hsf.

HardOCP Thermistor results

There's a comparison at the bottom, it actually looks like CoreTemp comes out a bit high with Speed Fan and Asus Probe being more accurate. HardOCP actually uses an embedded thermistor so its a pretty accurate reading imo. I know other programs like HWMonitor, RealTemp and OCCT use the same diode as CoreTemp so they may all be a bit high.

Regardless of what program you use, make sure to pay attention to temperature deltas, as they should all be relatively accurate. If you see huge fluctuations between idle and load that seem out of line with other results for your cooler that'd be reason for concern and a good indication you can improve results.

Pretty sure Fahrenheit. What method for AS5 do you recommend?

I used the line across the cores and the turned the hsf a degree each way before locking down.
