I just bought a new E8400 processor. I now have 2 different stock HSF. Old one which is larger, and the new one which is smaller.. Now I assume the larger one is better, and they just make them smaller to save money.. Is this correct?

I actually have three of them.. They are all different to. Two of them are the bigger sized versions, but one has a copper base and the other one has a base thats silver in color...

The copper base one feels heavier to. Then I have the really small new version.

Uhh, one is from a E6400, and the other one is from a E4500 or something like that (both larger sizes)

if you are buying an older type one, the best are the Q6600/q6700 ones.

i suppose if you can get one from a qx9650 the fan on thoe is huge, but generally they are expensive on ebay.

The newest ones are a little shorter than the older ones which were the same size as p4 ones.

from what i've seen ,

celeron D 3xx series has had the older height, PWMM fan, and no copper
celeron D 420 i had , had the new short height, a 3 pin fan, and no copper
core 2 duo e6300 i had , had the older tall height, pwmm fan, small copper core
pentium D 8xx series i've seen was more or less the same as the e6300 one and p4 ones i've seen
q6600 ones i've seen in pictures have a larger copper core than the pentium D or core 2 ones.
i had an e4300 and e4400 also and those have the larger height but no copper with 4 pin pwmm fan.

the e7200 i have now, has a shorter heatsink like the celeron 420 but with a pwmm fan.

i think in general you can put the bigger ones on the cpus that came with the smaller ones. Intel definitely does this for cost reasons. And possibly even weight reasons.

metals in general cost A LOT of money and if intel can save $1 by not including a copper core when its not needed (since well they are only giving you fans that are for stock clocks) that is a lot of money. Since metals generally are expensive now, especially copper.

Heatsinks photo

3rd party heatpipe -> Intel 65nm Core2 heatsink -> Intel 45nm Core2 heatsink

It seems the 45nm parts come with newer, weaker coolers, since they do produce less heat at stock speeds. If you plan to overclock, buy a 3rd party one. If not, well, they're built and certified by Intel to get the job done.

That 45nm heatsink looks like it has a copper core. IIRC the heatsink that came with my Xeon E3110 is the same, except no copper. In fact, IIRC it was identical (heatsink, don't know about fan) to the one that came with my Celeron 420.

Both of mine have copper cores. The one in the 45nm cooler is quite a bit smaller.

The odd part for me is that my 65nm cooler came with a dual core chip, and the 45nm cooler came with a quad. It *barely* manages to do the job, while plopping the larger one on allowed for some minor overclocking headroom until I bought a real man's heatsink.

My stock HSF's came with E6400/Q6600 are exactly same.

maybe it was the B3 step q6600s that had a slightly larger copper section.

they had a 10 watt higher TDP.

also the dual core e7200 anyway does not even have a copper core. apparenlty the quad core 45nm do according to another poster.

Yes my Q6600 is B3 step.
