core i7 & photoshop problems...

There's this funny thing called Adobe software. We all know adobe programs lag behined available technology, but still...:

I have win 7 64 bit and I'm using photoshop 64 bit. Core i7, 12 GB of ram & gtx260 216 is my hardware system.
In photoshop you can check how this software sees the "system".
Well, in 64 bit PS version PS sees 2 cores and 4 threads, while 32 bit PS sees 4 cores and no threads...
Any ideas how to fix this and is any other ppl here having same issues?

I don't want to go into Premiere & Adobe media encoder stuff, cause it's hilarious how this "pro" video editing software is using only 30% of my resources and I still have to wait 3x time I should on editing & transcoding stuff... Not to mention they didn't hear about GPU (opencl?)...

It's so strange to buy yourself a brand new "workhorse" system nowdays, only to find out later that all the programs you're using are not working any faster than 2+ years old core2duo system...

Where can you check your system in PS? Haven't found that in all the years ;)

But anyways.. sure, that it isn't just a bug? After all every AT benchmark shows a performance advantage for core i7 systems - which wouldn't be there if it wouldn't work with HT (i5-750: 18.1; i7-860: 16.4; i7-920: 17.4; these results just make sense if HT works, otherwise at least the 920 would be beaten.. for example see http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3641&p=3 )

So first of all I'd try some CPU intense stuff and look if the load doesn't go up on all cores.

I tried applying some noise & radial blur on 4000x4000 300dpi image and indeed all cores worked. But when I resized 10 layers from 5000x5000 to 300x300 just one core worked... quite funny...

here's the system tab

I'm not 100% sure (maybe like 90%) but not all filters are multi-threaded. If some actions are loading all the cores, but others aren't I'd suspect that's the issue.

I second that. Go to any photographers forum and this is a big complaint. You will also see people arguing over whether a 3 ghz c2d is faster in CS4 than a 2.4 ghz quad. It depends on the filter.

Yet another classic example of how lack of competition leads to stifled innovation...Adobe has been the "goto" graphics package for more than a decade now and still has the same old lackadaisical attitude towards improving performance and leveraging multi-core systems as it did in 1999.

When will photoshop become more thread aware and faster? Whenever Adobe views not doing so as becoming a threat to their marketshare and revenue.

Agree!
I think hardware/software sites should focus on this questions a bit more in future...
