Core i7 can tolerate up to 1.55V without major damage. Surprisingly higher than Penryn's 1.45V. That's a lot of overhead, with that much voltage you can crank something like 4.5 GHz out of the cpu. Whether you can keep that cool is another question.

The maximum VTT voltage is 1.35V (for the UNCORE portion of the processor)
The maximum VDIMM voltage 1.875V
The maximum VPLL voltage is 1.89V

Happy clocking ;)

1.55V! And I was nervous putting a mere 1.6V thru my B3 kentsfield.

I can't wait to see these i7's under water and on phase...with Vcore to spare they ought to clock like motha's.

What's the back of the envelope projection for power consumption of a 1.55V i7 at 5GHz? Around 340W at full load?

Well you should have been nervous, cuz the absolute max for 65nm kentsfield was 1.55V as well. So when you were putting 1.6V through it, you were beating the shit out of it.

Nah, nothing to be nervous to about. I ran 1.6v through mine for a long time, then I backed it down to 1.52 to conserve energy. There were diminishing returns anyway... Besides, Dell offered a system at 1.6v with a full three year warranty. Most of us upgrade our CPU's to often for the longevity of the CPU to be in question, save for someone doing something stupid and clocking it at 1.7v or something.

Thanks for the posting the technical information on the new line of CPU's. I'll be reading it here shortly.

I thought the maximum Vdim voltage was 1,6 V or around that!? Higher and the cpu takes damage.

I don't think I would be pumping 1.55V through a Core i7 on air..... but perhaps ~1.45V or so will be the upper limit versus ~1.4V on Penryn processors.

Mine was on phase cooling anyway, so -30C at full-load situation. Not entirely a concern, its more an issue for the mobo's mosfets and vrms than it is for the CPU.

1.55V on an i7 on air prolly just means you'll be thermal throttling sooner than otherwise. I can't imagine a rig would need 1.55Vcore to hit a Ghz that on air would also run at less than Tj Max.

It won't hurt the chip (at temps up to and slightly above the throttle limit) but its nice to know for the water guys and the phase guys that these chips can take the extra Vcc in stride.
