Core i7 build wont boot

I just redid my old system and put in an I7 930 along with an Asus pt6 se mobo and 6gb of corsair ddr3 ram.

I reused my Antec 640 watt PSU. Didn't think it would be an issue.

Now it's all together and...

I plug in the cpu, and the mobo lights come on. So far so good. As soon as I hit the power button I hear a click come from the PSU but nothing else. It won't boot.

I checked everything. It's all hooked up correct. I tried taking some of the load off the PSU, but that didn't help. So it's apparently not a situation where the PSU is underpowered.

No matter what I do the same thing happens. Plug in, turn the PSU on, get a lit mobo, and then when I hit the power button I just get a PSU click noise.

What's going on?

can you try sticking the old mobo/cpu into the SAME case and hook it up and see if the PSU works?

If the PSU works there, you can bet it's most likely something with the new Asus mobo.

You don't happen to have any shorts either? sounds like it might be the back of the mobo touching the case and grounding out.

And now I'm faced with a whole new problem, which is the fact that the asus Bios doesn't want to detect any of my hard drives.

hmm... Is the bios set to detect Sata as IDE or AHCI? I've had issues where the SATA wasn't set to detect as IDE and it was screwing everything up.

You may want to try upgrading to the newest Bios from Asus's website. I had a HUGE ram problem with the bios on my ASrock board, which from what I understand is Asus' cheapo brand of motherboards.

Okay, it was just some arbitrary IDE setting I had to disable. No problem.

One last thing though, kind of random...

The I/O shield doesn't want to go in place because the I/O ports are too flush against the back of my case.

I'm using a CM 690 II by the way.

You know, this sounds an awful lot like my problem that I had a few years back when I didn't know any better. What I did was I bought a new case, motherboard, and processor for my friend and started putting it together. What happened was I ended up with the same shorting out problem that you had. I didn't install the motherboard standoffs at all, and therefore the motherboard was shorting out because all the pins of the back of it were making contact with the backplate where the motherboard is fastened to.

Are you using the motherboard standoffs that came with the case? and are they all positioned in the correct holes?

I know that the ATX case I just built a Core I7 920 machine in doesn't fit perfectly, even with all the motherboard standoffs in the correct place. The I/O ports are not aligned 100% with the I/O shield. Even with this problem, I am still able to plug in USB cables and everything fine.
