Core i7 980X doesn't seem much faster than Core i7 860?

I should be getting one....

Possibly...

Maybe...

I need 2xQpi Gulfy's for it tho... ():)

After my first classified experience I am underwhelmed. FBDIMM support? nope. When you NEED the iops I crave you have to go to a more server oriented platform.

It's like Skullfail. What a waste of money that was. I didn't even bring it on the ship and had the broker take it away. They thought I was off my rocker because I was MAD but laughing at the same time. I told them I was so mad If I had that board with me I'd probably take steel wool to it. And that's a no-no. ;)

And yes no overclocking. I have a pair of Dell Precision T750s ($19K each) coming because of a video glitch caused by a so called stable overclocked system. Now everything done through video processing must be certified. I wish they were 6 core Xeons though. Still waiting for my 6Gpbs SAS hosts with 4GB cache too. And where's my Fermi based Quadro FXs? :p

What is it?
Why the TRUEs?

Have you seen some of the OEM heatsinks they are using now?
When I get my T750s I will take some pix.
If you can build heatpipes you can go crazy with cooling doing water on the OUTSIDE of the case, cooler running and neater/safer etc.

Alright guys... I realize my setup isn't cutting edge, but now you are starting to make me feel inadequate. No more dual-socket server boards with dual TRUE setups, please. :p

I don't even know how to respond to aigomorla. I think he's insane! :D

I think she works or lives on a cruise ship.

Yes and yes...

It just means I didn't want to go through the hassle of material acquisition, personal property check in, etc. for something I knew I did not want after I saw their results. I'm VERY picky about hardware now after other disappointments.

Besides, if you're going to spend money on a P55 machine, you're already spending a lot of money... we're not talking about $150 AMD rigs here. Why limit yourself on upgradeability?

My point exactly. Well, partly; I still think the 920 d0/Xeon W3520 is a fundamentally better CPU. The Xeon W3440 is also very interesting, but once you're talking about one of those chips, you're no longer in the same price range as the i5-750.

Are you willing to pay an extra $100-$150 for the 920 D0? Honestly, if I'm going to put that much down on a system with the expectation of overclocking it with a top-end HSF, good TIM, and loads of lapping, then once I've crossed the price threshold that you cross when looking at Intel systems . . . yes.

If I really cared about cost/performance THAT much, I'd be looking at an i3 or X4 (or unlocking cores on an X2/X3).

What games do you play that you would need such a powerful computer?

Hearts!

when u got 8 people going at once... man.. it becomes intensive!

Serious note..
Im currently in the middle of ME2.
The last games i played was Dragons Age, and BoarderLands.

How true. What's even funnier is that he's underclocking his memory....why? Who knows.....maybe his "expertise" isn't quite so expert. Or maybe it's that he cannot figure out how to run his RAM at its rated speed. Sure, he got his i5 up to 3.6GHz, at least according to his sig, but running 1600MHz-rated RAM at 1440MHz and not even dropping the CAS setting to take advantage of the slower speed of his RAM?

From his sig: Kingston KHX1600C8D3K2/4GX @1440MHz 8-8-8-24

Sounds more and more like a high school kid who's read a little and spouts off like he's experienced. Maybe he's trying to impress with his "expertise" the local Best Buy Geek Squad for a job interview. He certainly isn't much of an enthusiast given what he's using or accomplishing.
The RAM needs to be run at the absolute max vcore, 1.65V, at 1600 and CL8.

I made it 1440 instead of 1600 so that I can stay within the 1.575V which is the maximum ram voltage for both LGA1366 and LGA1156. In addition, even at 1440MHz, exceeding the max ram voltage is required to achieve lower latency which I hesitate.

Don't ever comment anything before you fully realize the reason behind them.

Yeah, he doesn't heed other's advice in this thread so I'll doubt he'll heed his own. Too funny. And here I thought this thread had died...
facepalmsmiley.gif

Quite true.

BTW, X58 system is 52.7% more expensive than the P55.

Those charts showing minimal performance gain with 3 way SLI on LGA1366 is fake!

I think we've found fleabag's replacement already! ;)

As for this:

I made it 1440 instead of 1600 so that I can stay within the 1.575V which is the maximum ram voltage for both LGA1366 and LGA1156.

You do understand Intel's official recommended memory voltages for the Core i7 are 1.50V as the recommended base voltage and 1.65V as the suggested maximum, not 1.575V. Eh, probably not.

ROFL!

LMAO!

These two are funny article writers and don't even understand the reason behind just like me!

These two bad guys never listen to you guys just like me.

I just looked at this post and what you are saying is confusing me. From what I gather Tri-fire is giving improvements on Crysis right? http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/p55-crossfire-nf200,2537-3.html

Or are you saying something else? Remember adding additional GPU(s) yields less than linear gains unless processor speed and/or resolution is increased.

P.S. To be honest I think Multiple GPUs return the most value when triple monitors are used. In fact, three 1080p monitors have 50% more resolution than a single 2560x1600 yet cost less than half as much.
