Both the Core i7 920 and Core 2 quad Q9550 are $319.99 at Newegg. But, the Q9550 is 2.83 Ghz and the i7 is 2.66 Ghz. Which one do you think is faster?

920 hands down. the only question is how much do you want to spend on mobo and ram, and how bad launch bugs are

there is an "economic" consideration: do you currently have an LGA775 motherboard or an X58 motherboard? do you have DDR2 RAM or 3 sticks of DDR3 for triple channel?

if youre going to buy a whole new system, then yes you could go with i7. but if you already have a P35 and up motherboard with good DDR2 RAM i would go for the Q9550.

if money is no object get a Core i7 Extreme 965! :D

edit: faxon beat me to it!

I'm still on a Pentium 4 Prescott 3.2 Ghz, so nope don't have compatible board or memory. Buying all new equipment, since mine is all 3-5+ years old.

So far all X58 the boards I've seen except the Intel smackover have 3 PCIx16 graphics slots and 2 ethernet ports. I for sure will not use more than 2 graphics slots and 1 ethernet port, so don't want to pay for that extra stuff. I was thinking about going with the Intel, but it only has 3 triple channel memory slots, would be a lot more comfortable with 6. I guess I'll have to wait and hope someone comes out with a board like that.

I don't think the Intel board supports SLI (only CF); that's definitely a limitation in my mind in addition the three RAM slots.

Cheapest SLI board I have seen:

That needs to come down about $100 :(

Yep, knew that. Not going to use SLI, going to use a dedicated card for PhysX.
