Core i5/i7 removable heat spreader

Hey guys, building my first i5 system. Just wondering if the heat spreader on CPU itself is removable, like the ones on the P4? Any cooling efficiancy gains by doing this?
 
I would NOT do this. You can get great temps/overclocks on air without even lapping the CPU or the HSF. Doesn't seem worth the risk.
 
This actually seems like an interesting question, so I googled it, and found this. Interesting, but still seems unsafe/not worth it.
