Core i5-760 Upgrade

Hi All,

I have a Core i5-760 and I want to upgrade to improve my single threaded performance. What should I get?

I am running some heavy FP transient simulations that are taking too long;; how much faster is Ivy Bridge over my Westmere?

Thanks.

SB averages ~ 15% faster than Westmere Lynnfield (i5-760) --of course some apps less, some more. IB may be 5% faster, so I think you're looking at ~ 20% average. Some applications only see maybe 5% speedup on SB so you might not see much of an increase clock/clock going to one of the newer architectures - YMMV.

Your i5-750 should be able to overclock to 4.0Ghz without much problem.

It will be interesting to see how high IB overclocks with the new tri-gate transistors. They may do 5.0Ghz as easily as SB does 4.5Ghz. Definitely get an unlocked SB/IB if you go that way, makes overclocking a cinch.

true story. best response. +1, etc.

i cant OC as i do scientific calculations and i am pretty sure my Intel mobo doesnt support it. What would be the best upgrade path right now for more perf? or is the cost just not worth it?

I'm not sure why you can't overclock "because of the scientific calculations" … unless it's a work computer, and not yours to O/C. The fact that it's an Intel M/B certainly could mean it has no overclocking provisions.

Hardware is pretty inexpensive these days for performance you get. I've seen i5-2500K + motherboard deals out there for $300. You could swap components and sell i5-760 for $150 making the cost of an upgrade only $150. The inexpensive route to go would be to get a new 1156 M/B (Gigabyte/Asus) and swap all your components over and overclock (if it's your computer).

If your loaded 🙂 or it's a work computer, just get a i5-2500K. Although, you may not see a huge gain in performance. The 2500K turbo's to 3.7 (single thread) and your i5-760 turbo's to 3.3 (single thread). Add the numbers up. If we're optimistic and you get 15% increase performance on SB + 12% clock rate increase that's (1.15 x 1.12) = 29% faster -- not really a huge speed increase but significant enough to notice.
