Is the Xeon slower for gaming? What about with Hyper-threading disabled?

Also: does the Xeon run cooler? The TDP suggests it does.

Note that both CPUs being locked is not a factor, as I am not considering overclocking.

the differences are, 100MHz less, but the e31230v2 just like the i7's have HT and 8MB of l3 cache (compared to 6), so whenever HT is used it's going to be faster, and single thread performance can be a lower, but not by much, it's what, 3% clock difference? and the extra l3 cache can help...
 
The E3-12x0V2s are just IB i7s with locked multipliers and disabled integrated graphics. There aren't many apples to apples comparisons to show this; most E3s are in conservatively timed server boards and therefore bench slightly slower. But in an identical system they will perform identically to an IB i7, clock for clock.
 
25$ for HT doesn't seem like a bad deal.

The reason the TDP is lower is because there is no igp. But if you use 3570 with discrete card the igp will be disabled and then TDP is the same. Non-overclocked IB runs pretty cool already and I don't think they use solder instead of tim for Xeons.
