Hello!

I have recently built a Core i5 2500k rig and I'm looking to buy a heatsink. Thing is, I'm from India and not many brands are available here. I pretty much have to make a choice between the following and want to know which one I should go for:

Cooler Master 212+ ($40)
Cooler Master V6GT ($109)
Noctua NH-U12P SE2 2 ($84)
Corsair H70 ($111)

Out of the list mentioned above which one should I go for, please recommend. The prices stated are all relative to where I stay. I really like the V6GT from the reviews I have read and love it's looks. I'm tending towards it but when compared to the others in the list is it worth the extra money I will end up spending on it?

Regards,

I second the using of a Noctua.
I read way to many posts about high temps with CM 212+s.
I used a Cooler Master 212+ on a e8400 at 1.3v and had to use a second fan.
If you can mount the corsair radiator to the inside rear of your case it may be the quietest of them all.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Unfortunately, the Noctua D14 is not available here. Is the V6GT a bad choice or should I just get the CM Hyper 212+ and get 2 X Scythe Gentle Typhoon's for it? Will that be a better option than spending the extra money on the V6GT?

It looks like a good choice, but not that much better than 212 at 1/2 the price..

....

If someone has too high temps with a 212, then it is not installed properly or they have a config that needs water...

I'm at 4.9ghz and temps stay below 75 ...

Spending $90 for air cooling is a waste of money IMO ...

Wao, if your running your i7 2600k at 4.9 with the 212+ without any heat problems, then I should be fine with it in push pull.

I'm 99% sure it has nothing to with 212+ and everything to do with CPU lottery. My 2500k idles at 40C while my previous X2 555 which clearly draws more watts idle does 28C with the same 212+.

My vote goes to CM Hyper212+ with 2 Scythe Gentle Typhoon in push pull. It won't look as nice as the V6GT but definitely perform about the same or better and with 2 Gentle Typhoons it is going to be a very quiet rig.

Are you seriously trying to claim an I5 and a phenom idleing at different temps is due to whether you got a good chip or not? I have literally no idea how that makes sense in your head

well, if its the same cooler and mounted correctly in the same ambient environment, and baring no errors in temp reporting

if the i5 reports a higher idle temp, it means it is outputting more heat than the Phenom II... inferior chip vs someone's i5 that idles at 30C

but i'd go with something wrong with your mounting, not your chip... it shouldn't be that high above your ambient temp of 24C if that indeed is your ambient temp

How are you measuring these temperatures?

CPU temperature calibration (actual sensor data vs. a human-readable temperature) seems to be a gigantic lottery based on program used, age and brand of hardware (whether it's in the database of the program and actually correct)... blah blah. I'm not sure it's reasonable to compare temperatures read from one CPU to another.

This is why testing CPU cooling efficiency for heatsinks makes much more sense to do it with a giant resistor pumping heat into a metal plate, i.e. like Dan did here. It's an old article for old heatsinks, but the idea of extracting heat from something isn't exactly different since it's one of those fundamental thermodynamic laws that govern the universe. ;)

Im using Hyper212+ w\ mine i5, just installed the other night....i must say they are fiddly things to put together, base plate, screw down, balance HS on CPU, then put the sissers through with screws in right hole, try not to bash anything and tighten the screws down, then you can push the fan on...!!,LOL, and the damn printing on the instructions in too small...fark, im getting old!

Anyway, running 4ghz until the AS5 beds down, at low 40 at load at present!

Thanks guys for all the replies... made my decision in buying the HS much easier. I'm going with the CM 212+ with 2 X Scythe Gentle Typhoon's in push-pull config. No point spending the additional $70 extra on the CM V6GT really. I'll rather save that money and put it towards upgrading my GPU which I plan on doing soon.

Cheers!

Good choice! I just put mine on this weekend and I was running 4.7ghz on my 2500k in the Mid 40s at idle. I did not use the "pea size" method when applying the thermal grease. I used Ceramique and used the method I have been using since the athlon XP days and I applied a thin layer to the CPU, then I filled all the crevaces of the heat pipes on the base of the heatsink. Slapped it together and my temps are 27c idle and 55c load @ 4.2ghz on a 2500k running at 1.28v. Not complaining at all :)
