Core Duo vs Core 2 Duo

I didn't realize that there were two different chips until I looked into buying a laptop.

Obviously I am an AMD fanboi and haven't looked too much into Intel lately.

Could someone please explain the differences or link to where an explanation could be found?

And where does the T-2050 fall? It's at 1.6GHz, but it is not on the table in that article. Does it have Virtualization? Does that help that much if I want to run Virtual OSes in real life? Any other downsides from the rest of the line?

It has a FSB of 533MHZ and no Virtualization, which means your limited to Software Virtualization.
 
Core Duo = Pentium M

Core 2 Duo = Pentium M replacement

basically, both cpus are dual core, but Core 2 is newer and a bit better. it performs better clock for clock and is more energy efficient (actually it draws more energy than core duo at peak utilization, but it is more powerful and doesn't stay at peak power for nearly as long).


 
Core 2 duo is about 20% faster per clock than Core Duo. Power consumption is slightly higher, but not much (maybe 5 minutes less on a battery). Core 2 duo also is 64-bit (good for vista), can execute SSE instructions in 1 clock cycle (compared to 2 for other chips), has a unified cache which results in less memory access, and also has a faster bus and faster memory support.

Basically core 2 is better in every discernable way compared to Core duo. If you're buying a laptop today and have the option to get a Core 2, I'd say it's worth it. You will get a chip that will last you MUCH longer without too much extra cost (i think with dell the Core 2 T5500 costs $90 more than the T2050)
