Core Duo Memory Speed

The 945 Chipset for Core Duo is designed to work with 667 MHz DDR2 Memory. Lately, Dell is offering the Inspiron 9400 with both 533 MHz memory and 667 MHz memory at a higher price.

I'm seeking some root knowledge. Does the memory controller within the 945 chipset autosync to the actual memory it sees? Can this be done without introducing memory errors? What is the impact on performance? Is it just the ratio 533/667 or less, because memory isn't always accessed? 😕
