Core Duo MBP hard crash issue

Hey guys,

I will definitely be making an appointment with genius bar but as I'm working from home at the moment I was hoping someone may have heard of or may know what the deal is with my issue. Here are the symptoms:

1. hard crash
2. accompanied by a sound that I would describe as sword being removed from sheath (metal grind-ish)
3. issue recurred about 3 times in the span of 5 minutes
4. issue has not recurred for the last 2 hours

My guess would be that one of the hdd platters spun off axis and ground to a halt which is very scary. I was able to boot up again and I immediately backed up with time machine.

Here are the mbp specs for reference:

2006 purchased
2.16 ghz Core Duo
15" Macbook Pro
2 gb ddr2 pc667
100 gb hdd @7200 rpm
osx 10.5.8

Thanks in advance for any info any of you might have!

Did you get AppleCare on it? It has since expired if you had, but it would have come with TechTools Deluxe (or is it Pro?). Drop that in and install it, and have it run a check on the drive. If it is failing SMART or anyhting like that, then you should get the drive replaced. Not for the unsure on the early MBPs.

You can also open up Disk Utility and see if it will tell you anything.
