Hey - Someone told me that Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHz/4MB L2 x2/1066MHzFSB) will cost only around $260 from July 22. Is that really true or a hoax? It sound too good to be true ??

Also can someone explain me why Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 (2.93GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB) costs double of Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHz, 8MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB) ? Shouldn't Q6600 be more expensive since it has 8mb L2 Cashe vs the 4mb, cosidering they both are around 2.4-9 GHz. What is so special abt X6800 and Q6600 vs the normal Core 2s?

Intel is closing out some 1066 cpus and replacing them with 1333 fsb. Not too much difference in performance, alot of hype if you ask me. Penryn has potential if they can run it at about 50 watts. We'll see. The current q6600 runs a little warm, but within acceptable levels. As one tech put it, you're often paying up to double for a 20% real world performance gain for a top end cpu versus lower end. That's where overclocking pays off.

Well, if no one can confirm the price will drop, then why do you want to confirm if you should wait or not? If the price drops, you buy, and if the price doesn't drop, you don't buy, right? If you can't confirm whether or not the price will drop, you can't confirm whether or not you should wait to buy or not.

:)

I would say that these price drops have been popularized enough that if Intel doesn't do them, though, they'll receive a lot of bad publicity. However, on the flip side, if the price drops do happen, I don't expect retailers to be selling CPUs for the "official prices" (just look at the C2D launch).

Bad publicity? From who and why would Intel care?

They'll get a lot of bad publicity from Wall Street analysts if they needlessly decrease ASP's on their desktop quad-core lineup.

When is Phenom launching again? Why would Intel do a price drop happen before it is needed? Because they suddenly love the 100 people on AT who are waiting to buy them at $266 instead of the current $480?

Quite likely but Newegg has always been able to get the price very near to the MSRP.

I just saw an HP desktop in a Circuit City ad that had a Q6600 machine for $1199. They are getting close.

You're right, there isn't a very good reason for that price structure. It costs Intel double to make a quadcore chip because it is just a pair of dual core chips, thus 2x4 (8) vs 4MB L2. It has more to do with when each chip was introduced than anything else. The X6800 was the fastest thing you could buy when it came out, while the Q6600 came out to provide a lower cost alternative to Extreme Edition quadcores. The prices just haven't been brought into line, and probably won't be until Intel refreshes the whole line with Penryn.

the Qx6800 has an unlocked multiplier, which is an enormous boon when overclocking. 2.93 is quite a bit faster than 2.4. Most people don't need a quad core, kind of like most people don't need a 1000w psu for their e4300 with an 8800 gts 320 mb, but they sure look cool. The prices should be more in line when the 1333 fsb processors come out on july 22. Um, that is, if you can believe the rumors...
