Core 2 E6600 Cooler Suggestion

Hello everyone!

I've got a Core 2 E6600 retail CPU for my next machine. It's going onto an Asus P5W DH motherboard which is all passive cooling. The case will be my trusty, old Lian Li PC-60 with front and rear fans only; no top-mounted fan. I do like the case very much, but I am worried about the air flow inside there. The rig will consist of a 520-600 watt PSU, ATI 1Kx-series video card (with aCrossFire set-up eventually), 2 Seagate 340Gig HDs and 2 Lite-On CD/DVD drives.

Knowing all this, is the retail Intel cooler adequate enough to keep my processor cool? I do not plan on oc'ing this machine...just looking for a really stable, fast "out-of-the-box" system. I have read that the Conroes are super-efficient heat-wise, but do not want to take any chances with such a high-end set-up.

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions...

It should be sufficiant, even for ocing a bit, however, do you still have the stock fans in the case? If so you may want to consider replacing them with something a little higher cfm, such as scythe s-flex "f"s.

The stock Intel heatsink/fan works fine although I would recommend using some good thermal paste instead of the "3 stripes" of thermal material that comes on the stock heatsink. I scraped it off and applied a thin layer of Arctic Silver and temps are very reasonable considering my crowded case and currently warm ambient temp.

Yes, I still have same stock fans on it. My case is a 2001 model, so it actually has two 80mm fans side-by-side in the front and an 80mm fan out back. They are fairly quiet, but I know they have to be close to burining out by now. Will look into replcing them. Think I need to mod my case by putting in a top exhaust fan?

Thanks for the suggestions...

Definately going to scrape that stuff off! Have Some AS Alumina and a little bit of AS 3 left...it's not their newest stuff, but it's still good, right?

Heck yeah, it's still good. I used some old leftover AS3 myself. :D

If you don't mind my asking, what temps are you guys getting for your CPU? I have a E6600 too, but it seems to be running pretty hot.

WeRd!

This is preliminary, but it would appear that Intel has quality control issues at the fab, with these new CD2 chips!

These are lidded devices, of course. The issue appears to be that the lids are concave on lot of them... 'We' built two identical E6600 machines last month, for a friend, and there was a 20º C difference between them... no kidding!

As a consumer, there is NOTHING you can do about this, except RMA your CD2 chip back to the seller, and tell them to send you one that's flat...
