Core 2 e4300+ not so quick....

I currently have a Core 2 e4300....My brother has X2 4200+ with the same setup as mine except the CPU & chipset...Same amount & brand of ram, hdd, video & etc....Both Gigabyte board, mine is 965P & his is nForce 570...

The first thing I've noticed is that my Core 2 is fast in encoding & ripping DVD's but when it comes to loading windows, games, applications and simply clicking apps like winamp seems to be quick in the X2 setup....

Maybe because of the intergrated memory controller that the X2 is quick to respond at any simple task but when it comes to heavy task like encoding video & audio, the Core 2 finished 1st by a small margin....

Judging the fact that both are used by not OC'ing, I should have bought a higher X2 instead of E4300 which is I can buy X2 5200+ by the price of E4300....

That is the truth... but you'll get bashed for it. ;)

I think the AMD chips still have a lot of life left for those building systems for sale because:

#1 most of those aren't overclocked

#2 boards seem a bit cheaper

As for those who don't overclock, whatever floats your boat since they are priced at about the same performance level, so a $180 Core 2 Duo will for most applications perform similar to a $180 Athlon x2.

I had a financial snag and sold my e6400 and ds3 . I had to go cheap on my new machine and spent 98 bucks on a 4400+ and a cheap ECS mobo. I honestly dont see a lot of difference.

The thing OCs to 2.9 easily and runs well enough that the only reason Im upgrading the mobo is to get a 16x pci-x slot.

If you don't oc, then for a given price range. Their performance is very similiar.

Try overclocking it. Push it up about 3.0ghz and see what happens. It should do that at near stock voltage, and with your DS3 that shouldnt be a problem.

And i have both, currently an X2 @2.8ghz which im donating next month. E6600 @ 3636
and a quad at 3375.

Currently ANY AMD machine in exsistance, available to public, not talking about agenda or barcelona, will get seriously chewed up, and spat out through the right nose of my E6600.

Lets not even start how badly my xeon would rape a AMD.

Loading windows + loading games + applications = RAM timings / HArd drive.

maybe your ram timings are off wack, or your running your latencys REALLY REALLY high.

When either of my machines boots windows, the bar doesnt even move past once b4 it boots up. But then again i run raid on all my rigs.

You failed to mention what hard drives/interfaces are used in each system, not to mention how much RAM and timings. The "slowness" you're describing has next to nothing to do with the CPU.

Yeah, my system seems very 'snappy' which is mostly attributed to my Raptor drive. Comparing a Raptor to a 7200rpm drive is never going to feel the same.

i have 4 in raid :D

but that is why i said, it has to be his ram timings, or Hard drive.

There is no FREAKEN Way an AMD will be as fast as a C2D with a slight fsb push to 3.0ghz.

And i want to say this, however im not 100% sure. But 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 % of all the C2D's will do 3.0ghz with a stock or slightly nudgeing the voltage.

Maybe he doesn't want to overclock, which is why he hasn't. However, I do agree with you, it is an option he should explore. But I think he should first just run it at 2.4GHz, as almost every single e4300 in existence seems to be able to hit 2.4GHz at stock voltage. Even though it'd be 600MHz slower than your suggestion, it would definitely eliminate any CPU bottleneck he's experiencing, in comparison to his brother's X2.

All I know is, in more than one comparison benchmark ive seen done, the E6300($169ish) was compared at stock speed to the AMD X2 5600(which is 2.8ghz and costs $195ish).

So a 1.8ghz c2d compared to a 2.8ghz X2. The X2 5600 was faster, but only by a small margin in pretty much every area. Seeing as how the E4300's can be had for $100ish or E6320 for $169ish, and overclock like crazy. A very mild overclock on a E4300 or E6320 to like 2.8ghz should blow away even an X2 5600.

I dont know all the specifics of your testing but.... Perhaps you had benchmarking issues or bottlenecks holding you back? Wrong settings? Crappy mobo? I dont see how a lowly x2 4200 could be as fast or faster than an E4300. You did something wrong. :)

Anyways thats my .02 cents. :p

I'm interested to see how 64bit apps in Vista x64 perform between the 2 if the app can use both cores. That would be interesting to me. Soon we will see 64bit vs32 bit benches between the two.
