Core 2 Duo & Win 2000 Pro?

Greetings, all.

Need some advice: Considering building a new Core 2 Duo Box (w/ E6600), but one which still uses my older (recently purchased) 7800 GS (AGP) card.

Want to stick with this older v. card because I think I have a better chance of making it work with shutterglasses--I bought it because it was the fastest card I could find which still sported one native VGA connector (native connector required, I'm told, for those glasses--adapter on top of DVI won't work).

--------

Here are the questions (2): I'm still running Win 2000 Pro/SP3. It supports "SMP," but will I see the same sort of performance increases with this newer Dual Core processor that XP users would (given identical speeds, FSB, memory, mobo's etc)? Or would I also need to plan on an upgrade to XP in order to realize those benefits?

I get to the point where I can't justify sending another $100 or so to Redmond, even for an older card I want to keep.

I'm NOT expecting to upgrade to Vista on this new PC or any other build (I'm figuring I'll move to Linux next year), and so whatever I do, I expect this will be the end of the line for this v. card, and for me with Windows. But I'd like to get the most out of it too, and it seems a Core 2 Duo could be and improvement over my current P4 2.4.

Probable mobo choices if I do upgrade: ASRock 775Dual-VSTA or ASRock 775i65G. Leaning toward the latter with DDR400@355 (or however high it will go with the latest mobo BIOS).

Expect to run the E6600@stock speed in this setup.

Thanks for any advice.

Windows 2000 Pro is essentially the same as XP. Both are based on Microsoft's NT.

Should work just fine.

It'll probably be faster, was for me, less bloat and teletubbies crap in Win2k. Many cyber athletes competing in 3Dmarks still use w2k.. I wish I never switched this year to XP, brought me nothing but hours of trying to make it look like w2k,...still can't turn these damn yellow ballons off saying stuff like "click here to begin" as I mouse over start button.:( No, really? I did'nt know that after 6 years with the damn start menu. Frekken automation... And I agree with you, I'll move to Linux too even if I have to give up PC gaming before that POS VISTA.

Microsoft no longer supports Windows 2K.

Lifecycle program for operating system support from Microsoft.

SP3 pushed back to 2008. I wonder if they are trying to convince XP users to upgrade...? I mean, if SP3 came out, a lot of people would think that the security of WinXP would be far greater and not want to hit Vista, since it is not required. however, I'm pretty sure updates will still occur for XP and Vista. so I've got my eyes open for this crossbreed of OS integration.

anyway, 2K will be awesome, but don't expect anything special from Microsoft anytime soon.

I'm not sure how DX10 will run on 2K if it's not on the support list. but you got a year anyway. peace

When did they stop supporting 2000?
I just updated a 2000 install two weeks ago and had no problems.

I did also, i loaded a laptop and did all the updates. Surprisingly Win2000 on a P3 1.1 512mb of ram ran pretty damn good. I wonder how it runs on my Core2Duo 2.1 laptop...hmm

:p My 2000 install was on a 533 Celeron with 384MB memory.
The system was actually quite snappy considering the CPU type & speed. It's no master blaster, but it's fine for office apps... one at a time.
A 7200rpm HD really made a difference also. :)

The pop-up text affected by this setting includes "Click here to begin" on the Start button, "Where have all my programs gone" on the Start menu, and "Where have my icons gone" in the notification area.

START > RUN > GPEDIT.MSC > USER CONFIGURATION > ADMINISTRATIVE TEMPLATES > START MENU AND TASKBAR > FIND REMOVE BALLOON TIPS ON START MENU ITEMS > CHECK ENABLED > OK

---

I tried this and it doesn't seem to work on my rig. :(

I've tried dozens of things and even registry hacks. There is no way to turn these off along with plenty of other yellow pop ups like in windows explorer. even offered a $50 paypal award on OT and no takers.

I use 3rd party everything
-Firefox web browser
-winamp
-vlc player
-openoffice
etc etc etc

so whatever, if any, features XP added I don't need. All I need is an OS to STFU and launch games and third party apps from. In the mean time I don't wanna hear from it unless asked. I would swith back but there was a game, I think oblivion I could'nt install in w2k.

Ok, sounds like the consensus is this combo should work pretty well, so I'll forge on ahead.

Thanks for all the input peeps.

Use the latest version of TweakUI, there's a setting under explorer that WILL stop those balloons from popping up. This is a PER USER setting.

Sorry blain and MS dawn... still there.

If you can get it to shut off I'd like to see a pic while mouse is over start button and no "click here to begin" I don't think it can be done.

Why are you mousing over the start button so long before clicking? If you don't dawdle you won't be prompted with the pop-up, same as with everyfing else on the taskbar. :p

Don't get me wrong, I am not keen on the XP crap either but por moi 'twas necessary once I went HT & FPD. Hmm, with the former no longer relevant (as far as we know), we primarily only need ClearType to go back to good ol' 2000!

Anyhoo, I beat y'all runing 2000 Pro on a P233 64MB. A then current HDD upgrade minimized the effect of paging and made the system quiet useable... for mum. :)

It happens in a lot more situations than that without dwadling. For example instantly in explorer view window which steals my focus.

Example

Quick launch is another place it pops up telling what stuff is..

Hate it. But I bet it's linked to same thing as start menu so If I can fiqure out how to turn that off all will go off.

http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifeselect

The keyword here is Extended Support. If you're willing to deal with this, you should be aware that other computer companies actually follow this policy as well, namely software developers if you plan on playing games. Optimized more and more for users with the most-run operating systems like Win XP and current Mac systems.

I'll do a multi_Os if I were you, Intel does not promise the best performance on OS's that Microsoft does not "fully" support.

No big deal. Something you shouldn't lose sleep over, either. Good luck~

Speaking of another thing I hate.. Look at that explorer pic and see how no hiarchiacal lines are drawn folder to folder to show a nice dotted line path? Win2K had them XP does'nt.. hard to see where the hell you are, what folder is in what?

I think I'm going back to 2000.

I don't use Explorer as a file manager but the only reason yer suffering pop-ups for folder names is because the pane view is too small (folder/file seperator adjusted too far left).

Try PowerDesk free. It's much better and even has the hierarchical lines (oooh!) :D

Sure, dawdling likewise has the same effect on the QuickLaunch and Tray/Notification Area (I really meant the whole bar when I wrote Taskbar).

TweakUI 2.10 does not appear to have such Explorer option to disable "Click here to begin" &c. Under Taskbar there is balloon tips but mine was disabled long ago and so is unrelated to "Click here to begin" which remains but never bothered me since I don't see that schtuff unless I choose to by lingering long enough. The policy setting appears to describe exactly what you want to do... did you reboot afterwards? Personally, I do not want to enable that and thus disable info from mousing over Tray icons.
