Core 2 Duo running 4 threads

This is my first experience with the smp program so I'm not sure if my results are normal. i installed the mpich version on my macbook running XP and i see 4 folding processes in my task manager. I thought I would only have 1 for each core.

I've not tried the SMP core myself (because it's cumbersome to set up and manage), but for maximum efficiency you should not have more CPU folding threads than you have physical CPU cores.

It wasn't too tough to set up. I had problems with it in the past on that same machine, but I thought i'd give it a try again and it worked perfectly, except for that it looks like it's running 4 threads. When I had to do the setup for it, I saw the part where it said MPI should appear once for every core you have and it did; it showed twice. I'll have to try to restart it when I get home. The only thing I can think of is that maybe I mistakenly set it to launch as a service when i didn't want it to and now since I'm also launching it manually, that's where the other two cores are coming from...i'll have to check that later.

The SMP F@H core uses a minimum of 4 cores.
I noticed a slight increase in PPD over running 2x single-threaded applications. It allows the processor to stay at 100% completely, not just task manager 100%.
I usually run 1x SMP on a dual core, 2x on a quad core and 3x on a Core i7.

I did not know that. I suppose I should probably read more thoroughly next time. So what you're saying is you run 4 threads on a Dual core, 8 threads on a quad and 12threads on an i7. Wow, that's a lot. ok, thanks for the help.

Yeah I noticed the same thing when I got it running, but it is working fine and pumping out a considerable amount of PPD, much more than 2 uni-proc clients.

FaaR, it is actually really easy to setup. Same as the regulare client, just CLI instead of GUI.

Just make sure that you download "Affinity changer" if you run 2 or more smp clients.

With a dual core, each core will use 2 threads per core without the "Affinity changer" needed and with a Quad core it will do the same but much more efficient with "Affinity Changer" installed. I am sure this also applies with the i7.
